Re: Car battery goes flat overnight

Probable cause is a poor secondary contact on the drivers door switch. In all the years I worked with them I only saw one that wasn't and it had damaged wiring.

Fuel relay is a tachometric relay, not impact sensitive. They do fail however.

Re: Over heating problem

When it's hot is it circulating, rev it and you should see the water traveling through the expansion bottle from the small hose on the top. If you haven't got that then worth a closer look at the pump, although the rad could be partially blocked restricting the flow. Just have to work through the po...

Re: Jury service

I did it nearly 30 years ago when I was an apprentice. With the paid expenses I was better off there than at work, and doing shorter days too, so got friendly with the jury officer chap and managed to do an extra week. He did his best to put me on the most drawn out case he could but alas it had to ...

..... and to bleed, fill the system, run with the cap off until the thermostat opens, at which point it will almost boil then burp and swallow the water. Top it back up and put the cap on, that's it, no other trickery required.

I'd agree with the suggestion of a dodgy stat, it sounds like it doesn't have enough flow through the rad.

The end of the spring does indeed locate in the same hole as the cable, and this is what prevents the cable popping out

Re: C18NZ no start after reinstalling fuel pipes/Wiring etc.

Check the voltage at the pump when cranking, it won't do anything until you crank. If it's been dry a while it might be that the pump is stuck, worth clumping it. You can check the current draw of the pump if you have voltage, normal is around 2.5-3a, less than two suggests no fuel or an impeller sp...

I'm a numpty, didn't read properly and thought I'd seen the mention of a carb. The centre pin trick works with the old distributor type ignition systems.

Do the centre pin thing, you can check the entire system in one hit doing that. First thing I always do with the 3 wire distributor setup.

Re: Spark only when ignition turned on not cranking

Quick check, pull the plug off the dizzy and poke a wire in the centre pin of the harness. Flash it to earth briefly, each time you hit earth with it you should get a spark from the king lead. If you do then the hall sensor in the dizzy has likely died, or it's not going round (check cambelt and diz...

That hose is a good contributor too, unmetered sir will weaken the mixture, causing the system to chuck as much fuel in as it can to bring it back

Re: Camshaft sensor or crankshaft sensor

Cam sensor signal loss will not generally stall the engine, it's very common for cam sensor signal to show up as a code from a loosely adjusted cambelt tensioner, so that's worth looking at. The only one I ever had that had repeated problems with it had a leaking windscreen, straight down the loom i...

Vauxhall introduced a lot of those features because of the abysmal record with the previous generation of Vauxhalls. Stolen recovered repairs were an everyday job in the late 80s early 90s in the main dealer.

Re: Brakes not working right

Air in system, a leak, or a master cylinder failure. Was it a problem prior to changing the wheel cylinder? Old master cylinders quite often fail when manually bleeding brakes as the seals fold with the additional travel of the pedal.

Re: How do I tell R or S chassis?

You have answered your own question :-) The letter signifies the model year, S being '95. Also worthy of note that the new model year started to come through from the factory in about October or November of the previous year, so for example, a' 95MY s chassis car might have been registered in late '...
