Re: Cav 1.7TD blowing blue smoke out of exhaust.
Bit late on this one if you still have it. How do you know you have a duff injector? If you have a glow plug down that will cause it to pump blue smoke until it has warmed up. Also don't forget your valve clearances. They can and will close right up even if it's just one cylinder, usually no1 at tim...

Re: Door mirrors
Sorted
Managed to dismantle the new mirror without breaking the glass
also found a spare motor.
To use genuine mirror glass with my aftermarket unit i need to swap the motors out. The original motor fits perfectly using the same mountings.

Re: Door mirrors
Well they do look different. I'm sure I have spare motors in the garage but can't find them. When you manually move the GM mirrors they crack and click as you're moving the mechanism by hand, these new mirrors make no noise what so ever, the mirror plate seem to be mounted flush onto the motor. I wi...

Re: Door mirrors
Thanks Robsey. I've just received a brand new drivemaster mirror. I have a genuine gm blind spot glass that I bought years ago that I'm hoping will fit it. It looks good quality and everything seems to look the same as a genuine unit. I'll have to get the cover off the old unit and have a look. Neve...

Hi guys. Does anyone know if genuine GM replacement mirror glass fits in aftermarket mirror housings?
I'm guessing (hoping) all the internals are the same

Re: Lazy starter
I'd go with shims too. Sometimes I don't wait for the glow lamp to extinguish and it will start no problem. Getting the correct shims these days is a nightmare but my local engineers grind mine for £4 a shim. If you're replacing them yourself make sure the ground surface sits in the bucket. Don't to...

Re: Hidden relays
Thank you Robsey. I couldn't find any problem at all. I double checked everything that I disturbed while checking for the parasitic drain. Took it for a drive on Monday and it was faultless. Trouble is I can't go too far during lockdown. I think it has just about come to the end of its life. I've ha...

Hidden relays
Anyone know what each of these relays control? https://app.photobucket.com/u/paul_td/a ... c6579d86a5 Took the td out for its first run since fitting a new battery. After about 20 minutes driving I started to hear a sound like a relay cutting in and out behind the clocks. I almost entered panic mode...

Re: Parasitic battery drain
Did a bit more digging today, bloody freezing out. The large connector behind the passenger kick panel was soaking wet, looks like its been that way for a while. I think the seam sealer in the scuttle has cracked letting water in. Dried it all out and cleaned all the contacts. What a bloody fiddly p...

Re: Parasitic battery drain
No extras fitted. It's the 1.7td cdx. I have a digital voltmeter which comes on with the ignition. I have it because the alternators on these tend to overcharge when failing, so I can tell if it will start or not in the morning. It will actually start at 11.9v showing as long as the temps are not be...

Parasitic battery drain
Hi guys. been a while since my last post. I'm just wondering if anyone has ever measured the normal parasitic battery drain on a Cavalier. I'm getting 60ma which I think is a bit high. Battery is dead after 10 days, maybe less when it's colder outside. 60ma is 1.44amps a day so 10 amps a week. I've ...

Re: LED side light bulbs
I replaced the main brake pipes in November, it still had the originals and also the original rear brake hoses on it. I thought I'd never get the unions undone but they came straight apart, even the pressure valves came off without a fight. It needs a good going over underneath really but I just nev...

Re: LED side light bulbs
I'm kind of wishing I had gone for angel eyes now, I like the look of them. I know the single leds won't be any good as they only focus the light forward. I'll have to have a play around I suppose and see what happens. I have a love hate relationship with this car. I've had it 11 years and every yea...

LED side light bulbs
Hi guys :) I've just put two brand new headlamps on the old cav (genuine ebay bargains from last year) I'm thinking of upgrading the T10 501 bulbs to LED. I've never bothered with the LED bulbs before so I'm just wondering if I'm wasting my time? Has anyone fitted them and are they any good? If so c...

Re: 1.7td oil cooler leaking
I inspected mine about two weeks ago while the inlet manifold and head was off it. Looks like a right shitter to do especially if it's been on there since birth and with the engine complete. Haynes says to take the starter motor off and attack from underneath. Drain cooling system and disconnect the...

Re: GM online Parts Catalog - where is it?
Hi I used to always go to this site and look at diagrams for parts to get numbers but now seems to be down. I don't suppose anyone knows if there is an alternative site or knows anything about it? https://www.gmpartcatalog.com/ Thanks Andrew It disappeared a few weeks ago. I used it all the time fo...

Re: Window regulator plastic guide
If it's the same bit that I'm thinking of, I once did a repair on that on my mate's Cavalier, I used a small bolt, put that through the slider and put a nut on the end to secure it. Window still works fine on his motor. I thought about using a bolt but seeing as I was taking it out I might as well ...

Spoke to the local dealer today. You drill the old pin out, put the new one in the arm and peen the top over like a rivet.
Really looking forward to taking the regulator out, not!!

Window regulator plastic guide
Hi guys. I've searched but can't seem to find anything on these. My front drivers window dropped inside the door this afternoon, while closing it. First time I've had a window problem in the ten years I've had it. The white plastic guide seems ok, but the pin on the arm looks as if it has rusted som...

Re: Alternator life
Cav td, first Alt did 120k and failed just after its MOT. Second failed (I broke it) at 205k
lol. On its 3rd now. The early Hitachi alts were prone to overheating I think, because of the vacuum pump on the rear. Read it in some technical bulletin online, whilst searching for Alternator parts.

Re: 1.7td cav hard to start WARM
Mine goes up to about 950rpm when started from cold but only on very cold mornings. The cold start mech is down the back of the engine under the pump, think it alters the pump timing. Give mine a squirt with multipurpose oil now and again and check it moves freely. When was the fuel filter changed l...

Never heard of AMK. Personally I'd stick to, Borg and beck, luk or valeo. Pulled a Borg and beck out of mine about 2 years ago that had done 197k, replaced it with a Valeo and all has been fine. Pain in the ass to change on your own but doable.

Re: Front suspension wishbone bush
I cut the rubber bush part out and then gently cut through the outer sleeve without damaging the arm, you can then tap it out. Clean up the bush recess and then gently press the new one in with a vice making sure it's lined up depending on the type you have. Don't go near it with a hammer

Re: 1995 Cavalier 1.7TD Isuzu Engine - Valve Shims Availabil
I had the same problem last year. Some dealers just don't want to know and will say they are no longer available. All they have to do is order them in. I paid about £5 each. I have a full list of part numbers somewhere including the ones not available or superseded. You can go down the grinding rout...

I took both handles off the drivers side the other week to try and find an annoying rattle, I was going to check if they were a straight fit but was in a rush as usual. Shouldn't be too hard though.
