Re: Wheel trims cleaning

I do indeed mean wheel trims. Can you recommend an effective cleaner? The equivalent of a heavy duty oven cleaner I suspect but without the heat and aromas .. [Not easy to get it to soak into the dirt without putting the car on its side ..]

Wheel discs cleaning

There must be something in the way that (front) brake pad dust combines with grease to make traces of both baked onto the wheel discs (Cav standard) particularly difficult to remove. In the past I've just used ordinary car shampoo and put up with the inferior results. However I had a brainwave earli...

Ambient air temperature sensor replacement

I was hoping that my Haynes manual would tell me how to go about the above. Unfortunately the very last page(s) is missing which would include s for sensor. The last page in my book is Index Ref * 26 "Pedals". Could someone scan me what is missing? [If all else fails I have an old telefax ...

Re: Antifreeze Ponderings...

The Prestone Ready-Mix floats one disc at the top indicating protection down to - 7°C. I'm guessing that the mix does not "degrade" over time (very little mileage) and that the additive provides a certain amount of corrosion protection as long as it is active to the tune of one disc, regar...

Re: Antifreeze Ponderings...

Interim further ponderings: I have just purchased a new A/F tester (Draper) because the previous one was giving dodgy readings, and ordered some "orange" (officially "red") concentrate. Years ago someone advised me to go for orange for a 1991 Mk 3 Cavalier SRi and I have done tha...

Re: Antifreeze Ponderings...

Can anyone offer me any informed guidance re choice of antifreeze for my H-reg 1991 SRi - as on offer on Amazon or possibly eBay? I am not sure I have much faith in their filtering systems. What I think I want is the orange concentrate (1 L - 5 L) though you get the impression that Prestone clear wi...

Looks like you're right. Is there any way (short of dismantling) to test if the aerial motor is working?

Re: Strip and Clean an Electric Aerial. Discussion

Latest findings: The unit can pick up and broadcast radio signals despite the lack of an aerial, though the quality is not perfect in all areas, as could be expected. It calls itself a Kenwood KDC 309A. The service manual is https://www.manualslib.com/products/Kenwood-Kdc-309a-258545.html the instru...

Re: Strip and Clean an Electric Aerial. Discussion

That was helpful. Needs, desires etc = Basic, limited, functional rather than aesthetic. Seems from what you say that the complete powered assembly is the one to go for a. if it fits and b. if I factor in labour charges for fitting one of the alternatives. I'd put up with the noise. Other things bei...

Replacement / repair of jammed electric aerial

Update on my N-reg 1995 LSi hatch aerial replacement story: The reason that the mast is jammed is that it has obviously been bent sometime in the past. There is a kink near the base of the lower section which no amount of Flash Cleaner, WD 40 and elbow grease is going to straighten. Heat possibly bu...

Re: Strip and Clean an Electric Aerial. Discussion

I will ask the vendor for assurance that what he is offering will do the job complete before placing an order. To me it is not important if the unit is "specific" to my N-reg, or even to Vauxhall, as long as it "fits" and works. In other words includes all the bits south of the e...

Re: Strip and Clean an Electric Aerial. Discussion

Car electricians round here happy to do an aerial refit job seem to be few and far between - Halfords didn't want to know - and one said to me that it was essential to replace like for like. Whilst I had guessed that within reason I could use a different type / fitting, even if it was not electrical...

Re: Strip and Clean an Electric Aerial. Discussion

Well, I established that I had a "female star socket" but which is probably not what is required. So I set to work with Flash Surface Wipes - Crispy Lemon aroma to be precise. But before they had a chance to work their magic, the lower end of the lower metal tube became detached from whate...

Re: Strip and Clean an Electric Aerial. Discussion

I have now seen that there is a How 2 upload pictures so I will update my comments with illustration of what I am faced with. I take it that the work that you describe is carried out from within the boot area (and not underneath the wheel arch as advised by the garage that I spoke to) Torx screws re...

Re: Strip and Clean an Electric Aerial. Discussion

That was indeed a very explicit How-2 guide for those with the inclination and ability to repair the motor itself. I think I personally would be looking at a replacement instead if that was the solution. Rather my problem is gaining access to below the aerial in order to do any work. This is as far ...

Re: Strip and Clean an Electric Aerial. Discussion

I was hoping that by now the How 2 Fixit might have appeared which would help me with the following: 1995 N-reg LSi hatchback. Aerial mounted on rear nearside wing. The sections have each jammed solid at half mast. Little visible sign of rust, it looks like the interior of the sections has seized up...

Re: Radio replacement conundrum

I hope that there is a way to exterminate this thread. The car had been in long term storage - unused. The suspicion that the radio had been nicked turned out in the cool light of day to be false. Just the fascia panel was missing which predictably duly turmed up in the glovebox. Demote this convers...

Re: Radio replacement conundrum

Thanks for the helpful comments. The choice will be simplified (initially) in that I will be limited to what choice of radio the Vauxhall breaker's yard can offer me. That said, the aim will be to have something functional rather than visually "correct" since this LSi was purchased origina...

Radio replacement conundrum

I have had an N-reg LSi in storage for a lengthy period during which time someone has deprived me of the radio. I guess one could pick up a replacement from a breaker's yard - but would that be of any use if I don't know the security code? Presumably the manufacturers designed these things precisely...
