Re: Antifreeze Ponderings...

The cheapest, eh? I figured that would be the case, I was just more concerned about the newer stuff for when it's fixed. The weird stuff I saw in Halfords was OAT AF, which is something I was wondering about. Not sure if it's meant for newer cars with better gaskets and seals or what, but I thought ...

Antifreeze Ponderings...

So, while I'm saving to get the head gasket replaced, the Rembrandt is being a tad thirsty and draining the coolant at a slow and steady rate. I'm topping it up as and when required, but as winter nears, I'm going to have to start thinking about antifreeze as well, and whilst browsing the generic pa...

Re: EML light

Handbrake is on when the lever is up, so that should go away when you take the brake off as expected. The battery light staying on when the engine is running is indicative of the alternator not charging the battery, either a knackered regulator or the alt unit itself has somehow managed to short int...

Re: Cables Thread of Ongoing Misery

Yup, spoke to a decent little garage near work, asked them for a pricing... all the above plus a few other things like crack testing and the like comes to around £600 notes... Given I picked the car up for £350... I'm torn. I'd like a proper done up Cav one day, and this one seems to be a good candi...

Re: Cables Thread of Ongoing Misery

GOT THE BASTARD THING! After judicious application of the blowtorch (and several minor burns later), I managed to get the manifold to expand just enough to crack the rust and loosen the damned thing. Oh, the joy that came from knowing it was finally out of that wretched hole was glorious... THIS was...

Re: Cables Thread of Ongoing Misery

Yeah, this one is pretty damn glued in, but tomorrow I shall be using the blowtorch to see if I can get it to shift. My tame pet mechanic (who lives in Louisiana, formerly the West Country) advises me to do a compression test on the last cylinder, to find out if there is any issues with it. He also ...

Re: Cables Thread of Ongoing Misery

Well... bollocks. It was all going so well, too. I set out with unbridled enthusiasm and determination to replace both sensors and get the old girl working SO much better. That was the plan, anyway. What ACTUALLY happened is now I have half an old O2 sensor with the rest practically welded into the ...

Re: Still trouble with selecting gears

Did anyone ever some up with a decent home-brew solution to replacing the magic disintegrating rubber bush? I recall someone mentioning zip ties at one point, but I figure there has to be something a little less white-trash-meets-McGuyver in terms of elegance.

Any ideas?

Re: Cables Thread of Ongoing Misery

Ok, so I've got a pair of new sensors to install (the O2 bobble and a new MAP sensor), thinking about swapping out the temp one in case that's also gone a bit soft. I was looking around the Ebays and caught sight of this one, just need one of you fine people to give me a thumbs up on whether or not ...

Re: Cables Thread of Ongoing Misery

Yeah, it's pointing to a wonky sensor.. there are no fuel smells around the car when it's not running, and I have to get down close to the pipe when it's idling to get anything of it... so I'm guessing the next job is the sensor. Should be fairly easy to do, unscrews and unplugs, yes? As for the fil...

Re: Cables Thread of Ongoing Misery

Yeah, I think I'll be replacing that next. I weant to stop that issue before I replace the exhaust/cat, so I don't knacker the new one/s.

Re: Cables Thread of Ongoing Misery

So... quick update... after popping the pipe off the filter box (because it's much less hassle than the sodding clip puzzle), it does appear that the filter was restricting the airflow. All gears seem to power properly all the way through the RPM range, and there is nary a misfire to be heard (Partl...

Re: Cables Thread of Ongoing Misery

Once again, you prove to be full of the kind of wisdom and experience I need! I have to say it's not running lumpy on startup though, seems to idle smoothly now I've done the EGR gasket/sealy goo, but does tend to drop lower once it's been running for a while. Definite smell of unburnt juice coming ...

Cable's Thread of Ongoing Misery

Sooo... a quick recap for those who might be new to this... Last year, bought a 1.8 from a nice bloke up North (one Mr 5853moore, if you're still about?), good condition, ran well etc. Had some good times with it, happy to have a working Cav once more. Since then, I have managed to work an inverse-M...

Re: Running LEAN 1.8i

Bloody hell, I've sorted it! So, turns out to be the EGR valve and gasket... Never had to deal with either of those in any cars I've had in the past, so wasn't an immediate concern for me when troubleshooting. Had a friend of mine who is more knowledgeable than I suggest it as a point of failure, an...

Re: Running LEAN 1.8i

Cheers guys! Been a while since I last checked this thread, but some more good stuff here to keep me occupied this weekend, I feel. Learning all the time here, and secretly wishing I had the diesel back on the road to give me less of a headache, but it's all good! I did change the coil, as several p...

Re: Running LEAN 1.8i

Ok, so it's acceptable to have some random bumps when at idle? Seems a bit odd, but I'll go with that for now... You've got more experience with these engines than I, so I'm happy to rock with that. Given the exhaust parts I'm looking at are 30 quid a section, and another 16-30 for the sensor, I'll ...

Re: Running LEAN 1.8i

Ahhh, so it never fully closes? Right, got it. So that's unlikely the issue then. Back to square one again! So, I changed the plugs a while back and got some missing power that I think was lost due to one of the plugs looking a bit more burned and worn than the others... I'll get a pic of those late...

Re: Running LEAN 1.8i

Ok, so haven't tinkered with the lambda sensor yet, but I have been wondering something... I suspected a possible blocked or collapsed air filter, thinking that may be the cause of the noise I've been hearing and also possibly the reason the engine runs a bit lumpy on idle. Had a looksee, and it's a...

Re: Running LEAN 1.8i

The reason for the pipe is that DO have a blowing sound under acceleration, eases off when I'm remaining at a constant speed but never goes away. No hint of it when idle though, which is odd. You'd expect there to be something present when the engine is running, but nothing. I'm wondering if it's th...

Re: Running LEAN 1.8i

Cheers guys, this is a lot of good info here and something to mull over. The single injector over the carb body threw ne some, as it's the first time I've ever seen anything like that before, all my previous experience being with diesel injectors and the like. Given the placing of the sensor, and my...
