Could be a fuel pump issue. Might be worth testing the fuel pressure. Should be 2.5 bar at the fuel rail from memory.
I had terrible problems on my Dad's 2.0 CD with this, this sounds similar.

What I don't understand is that the UK produces about 90% of it's own oil from the North Sea.
I know it's sold on an open global market but surely it should affect us less than elsewhere.

In theory there should just be one part for the centre section. It's only the back box that is different between the saloon and hatchback. I have a Klarius back box on Lizzie's 2.0i 8v.
Seems decent enough. I put it on there about 3 months ago and it still looks shiny so the corrosion protection on them must be fairly good at the very least.
