Carry six foot square fence on Cav roof with GM bars?

Post by ed2 »

Do you reckon it is legal to carry those cheap light six foot square fence panels on a cav roof? Using the GM roof bars.

The over hang on each side I am wondering about. A cav is 5 feet 6 inches wide so tayts ounds not so bad, but that is includng the mirrors so six feet may look a bit of a big overhang?

Could it be legal but I need to put a warning maker of some sort?

(I realise I may need to put planks or something on the bars so they do not push through the panels)

Check the highway code, can't see it being a problem.

the heater went cold last Thursday........
they check the level when it's serviced don't they?"

Don't see why not, as long as you anchor it down properly. Open the windows a bit, run a few ropes over the fence panel, through the windows a couple of times and tighten them up. If you want, fit a couple of high visibility flags or something on the front and back of the panel. Obviously take extra care overtaking buses and cyclists etc. If the overhang is only a few inches on each side, I don't see why it won't be ok.

If it's really windy, pop a few screws in the panel, just so they clear the roof bars on each side, then put a fat cable tie around the screws under the roof bar, effectively making a closed loop if you know what I mean.

Anything over 305mm projection from the sides and you have to give the police 2 working days notice.

Some how think you will be ok.

Thats nothing.
I bought a 6 x 4 metal box trailer home on the roofbars of my mk4 fiesta when it blew a tyre. Ratchet strapped it down, was good upto 70mph! Didnt go over that though. Also plugged the lights in, so it gave people extra warning! Was a bit top heavy on roundabouts, it got a bit rolly!!

Ive also bought a complete 80's honda moped home on the fiesta, upright on the roof rack!

Anything is possible!
