Are you going to be towing it on a trailer? or is the cav going to be towing a trailer?

I think 1300kg rings a bell, I looked at this for mine a while back. It might be in the handbook, I will try to remember to look when I get home.

Researched this again, unless the chassis plate states a lower max trailer weight then you can basically tow up to the weight of the vehicle, but it is recommended that you only tow 85% of the weight of the vehicle. Handbook states 1205kg for c20xe and another 30kg if it has AC. Nose weight is 75kg. Pushing it a bit if your van is 1250kg laden, but within as long as you are careful with loads. If you aren't experienced at towing it might be wise to have a practice with a bigger car or smaller caravan first. Caravan sales outlets have a computerised check these days and will not/are not allowed? to sell a van to someone that is going to tow it with a car that it shouldn't be attached to. These guys will probably be able to confirm for you.

NB. Myself and the forum administrators take no legal responsibility for the accuracy of the information given above. If in doubt please get it checked at a caravan dealer.

I used to tow a swift challenger 450/5 with my V6 no problem.Unladen weight was around 820kgs.
Seemed to remember i'd aim for around 50kgs nose weight.

As Planetc says check with a caravan dealer about what is safe and legal.

My old man as a well seasoned caravanner used to quite happily tow over the weight of the car but I think there are more stringent rules these days. I do know there is a maximum for the vehicle on the chassis plate that you cannot legally go over, as my zafira is severely crippled in this department at only 1050kg. There is also a gross train weight which is the laden total of both car and caravan.

take a look on the vin plate on the slam panel it should have 4 different weights on it in a list, so it will look something like this

1650 - vehicle weight
2950 - gross train weight (vehicle and loaded trailer so in this case 2950 - 1650 = 1300 so your loaded trailer can be up to 1300kgs)
840 - front axle weight
820 - rear axle weight

this is what mine states on my c18nz gls hatch

so i can tow 1300kgs but i don't know how to work out the nose weight

hope this helps have a look on your slam panel at your vin plate and it will tell you your specific weights as they may differ from mine

I pull a 900kg caravan behind my 2litre 8v gls. It does 70mph ok, but runs at about 95° constantly. Also, its really thirsty when pulling. I've never pulled a van before, the brakes are interesting! I had someone pull out on me, i barked as hard as possible to miss them, my abs worked but the caravan skidded to a halt!!

i recently towed a car transporter with a fiesta on it and the brakes were interesting there aswell lol. i just had trouble because of how low she is having the trailer on made her scrub the rear tyres.

Depending on when you passed your test allows alters how much you can tow...

kevwaggy has a point need a pre jan 1997 test to tow any thing more than a halfords trailor!

as for weight i always thought 80% to a max 0f 100% of the cars unladen weight weight is allowed

when it weighs more than the car the caravan could take control :tdown
