I can correct you on that, all you need to build an old Golf is some rust and a bucket, and all you need to build a new one is a couple of cheap computers, a load of plastic and some wheels.....Maybe throw a few nuts and bolts in there, for the hell of it.

From a model builder's point of view though, that is interesting to look at.

You don't like Golfs either then?

You really don't appreciate any old decent cars. Golfs are great especially the old gti's, I love anything old.

A great kit by the way

I love the way a Cavalier owner implies that a Golf is a rust bucket

I love most classic cars, most built before 1980 that is, especially American motors and old British cars, if you've seen photos of my diecast model collection, you'd agree. But Golfs in my opinion are just tin buckets, old ones were useless and new ones are just for reps who think they're posh because they have a big shiny badge on the front. That's my 2 cents worth. I'm sorry but they're too small and too common. Well, cars nowadays are oversized anyway so that screws that up, but they're still yet another over-common piece of boring crap....

I'll say one thing, I see where you're coming from, but at least Cavaliers were built properly out of proper metal unlike Golfs which are built out of rusty sheets of metal and new ones out of plastic.

Actually I think you will probably find that most people who have ever worked on cars professionally would tell you that the golf is better built than a cavalier.

Andrei do you have a problem with people who drive newer and more reliable cars. I drive a brand new van for work perhaps I should make a complaint as it makes me look posh. Your very stereotypical

Don't really have anything else to say on the matter, my opinion remains the same though. I don't like most cars built after 1990, and certainly European plastic buckets at that!

How you can say golfs are rust buckets i dont know, They are built like tanks, very strong and theres still plenty left on the road looking in much better shape than allot of cavs.

Out of interest andrei what other cars have you owned before the cavs? Were they all shite too?

VWs are very well built Andrei, partly why they retain such high resale value, and the Mk2 Golf in particular stands out as a car that has fared very well in the rust dept thanks to the quality of steel used on the vehicles when compared to its contemporaries. The cars you mention ie. British motors pre 1980, are the complete opposite, with most older UK cars being very poorly manufactured with crap quality metal and many needing complete restorations in order to survive to the present day. A Golf would have been a far better proposition than a Cavalier in its day that's for sure. I'm not sure what you mean when you say "old ones were useless". Perhaps this will clarify matters, albeit a Mk1:

(brilliant bit of advertising, and it gets the message across!)

I don't wish to sound rude, but you make sweeping statements with very little in the way of fact to base them upon and then refuse to engage when others want to progress the conversation with an alternative viewpoint. It's your way or the highway eh?! Not really in keeping with the spirit of a discussion forum!

I believe your v6 was made after 1990 was it not. The cavalier was made after 1980 which you said you don't like cars after that and the cavalier was the most common car on the road in the 90s. Any other contradictions lol

I'm currently working on a 1983 VW wedge camper Transporter T3 / T25.
Now that is a rust bucket underneath.
Despite being stood for 23 years, most of the bodywork is cosmeticly challenged but solid.

VW's designers did put strange ideas in their early vehicles, such as
1 - fuel tank under the cab floor.
2 - brake master cylinder on top of the dash behind the instrument pod.

Getting back to the rust theme -
Nowhere near as bad as my 1987 mk2 Cavalier though...
That ended up more holes than metal before it went to the crusher in 2009.

Most vehicles more than 10 years will probably have significant rust issues.
One thing I will say is that MOST cars built after 1997 have minimal character.

The most solid old car I knew was a totally rust free 1987 Renault 5 campus.
I think it is still happily knocking about.
