John Cleland buys his 1995 BTCC winning Mk3 Cavalier
BTCC legend, John Cleland, has bought the RML Mk3 Cavalier that he drove to victory in the 1995 title race. John already races his ex-BTCC Vectra B in the HSCC's Super Touring Car Championship, and I've asked him if his intention is to run both cars in next year's competition. Either way, watch out for a full feature about his Cavalier in a forthcoming issue of Performance Vauxhall (the feature I wrote about his Vectra B can be found in the December 2013 issue of the magazine):

Can't say I blame him.

I'm pretty sure that the car was listed on eBay for £150,000 before John bit the bullet and negotiated a deal. To put that into perspective, the sister car (on the cover of the current issue of Performance Vauxhall magazine) cost its owner a third of that figure.

That sounds like a lot but then again, as purpose built race cars go, that's probably a reasonable deal.

It's the car's status as arguably the most famous BTCC machine of them all that has influenced its price, not to mention the fact that John won the championship with it back in '95.

It's a right shame that TOCA Touring Cars pc game never had him in the Cavalier, they only based the game on 1998/99 years. He was still in the game but driving the Nissan Primera I believe.

I spent Friday morning chewing the fat with John - I'll be revealing more in an interview that I'll be including in Performance Vauxhall magazine, but the Cavalier pictured above ISN'T his championship-winning chariot after all!

So what is the car in his garage and what happened to the real Championship winner?
Or is that what will be revealed?
