I nearly bought a mk1 Astra the exact same as that when I first past my test in 1988 , instead I bought a mk 2 X reg met gold cavalier GL . From then on I was hooked ( and still am )

They are really rare now, but I think this one is destined to die eventually as the owner doesn't seem to be bothered about it. I've seen it around a few times. There are a couple of mk3s too, one of which is really nice.

I think your right, it's a big shame too as it could so easily be restored as long as there are no major problems underneath and the interior looked in very good shape.
I don't know why people buy cars like this and then run them into the ground and not look after them.

Re: Stuff we've seen on the road
At the weekend I popped over to a chums who transports cars for a living. He often stores cars at his place if the owner is wanting to settle (house move) before delivery, or perhaps if the car is going to a destination that is a significant distance from pickup. My jaw was on the floor. He opened a couple of his barns to reveal TWO 1927 Rolls Royce Phantoms, a mint Mk1 Escort, a Peugeot 603, a super rare 1969 Wood & Pickett Mini, a mint Austin Princess (in beige!), an Austin Healey, loads more. Amazing cars. The Phantoms were huge.
