Early MK3 8V SRI Cavalier

Post by CavtasticSRI »

Guys,
Just wondering but I have a White J plate 8V MK3 Cavalier SRI which I bought new. It's been sat on axle stands in a dehumidified garage for 22 years, it's really nice un-welded with the original exhaust still fitted.
I got a job in 1993 which came with a company car so I kept it as a reserve car, lols still keeping it in reserve :love.
It did see day light one summer evening in 2002 though.

How many are left though? 1000 or so??

22 years on axle stands? That has to be in the record books!

Yeah afraid so! it was never my intention for it to sit there that long to be honest, I'll try an upload a picture. J596UBL will need new discs, calipers, cambelt, pump and loads of other stuff to use it again. Plumber working on the garage fitted boiler offered me a grand 10 years ago, but not for sale.

That's one way to keep the miles off the car. Get some pics up, sounds interesting.

That's all Cavaliers registered as an 'SRI'. It includes the facelift 8v SRi and even some MK2 models as well.
It doses not include Cavaliers registered 'SRi 16v' or 'SR i'

Out of those listed, 83 are retested between 1988 and 1992 so I'd say that is a more accurate figure for the amount of pre-facelift SRis left on the road.

Scary to think that there are less than 100 early Mk3's SRI's left. mine is a Hatch which I think was a 90% of the new sales against saloon versions I believe.

My first cavalier sri was a hatch. As it was my main car at the time the hatch back is much more practical than the saloon. But the cavalier I have now is a saloon. That I think looks much better over the hatch. Since its just a toy it doesn't need to be too practical.

I think the saloons are practical enough. The LS always used to be great at hauling stuff around when I was a kid.
The saloons are a bit quieter as well I find.

Always thought it odd that GM never had an Cavalier III estate in their range

But then, 2-door SRis and GSis would have been quite nice too 8-)

4 door for looks, 5 door for practicality, indeed, shame there was no station wagon version, like the Mk2, that would have been awesome.

Yeah, it could have been a rather cool niche, but thinking back, they were working on so many different models of car it probably made more sense not to at the time.

Easiest way is if you have a Photobucket account, or any other photo storage site account, upload you photos on there, get the IMG or URL code, can't remember which one, when you post on here, click the Img button to insert the code for the link, and paste the link URL or IMG code in between the brackets. Sounds nice, gotta ask though, what was so special about that one evening 9/10 years later :)
Were the brakes & engine ok after so long off the road ?
Love to see the photos

Hi Everyone
I’ve just joined. I have for a long time resisted the urge to rekindle my affection for the Mk 3 SRI. I was fortunate to have one (Hatch) as a company car when I joined a new employer in 1991. The choice was a Sierra Ghia or a Cavalier CDI. When I asked for the SRI my new boss was surprised because it was cheaper than the other two models. I ordered Westminster blue and when it arrived the company had the dealer fit CD alloys, up graded radio cassette and motorised the sun roof. Registered H102 KGM we did 65,000 very enjoyable miles together. I’m quite sure there were faster cars in its class but the SRI left a lasting impression as being an extremely capable machine with the ability to not only munch the miles but be seriously entertaining in the process. This then was the first car I had driven with ABS and discovered the benefits of being able out brake most other traffic then with its closely stacked ratios and mountains of torque disappear into the distance. For me the SRI will always be a well kept secret as from memory the motoring press paid its abilities little attention. I am therefore currently looking for a nice but usable pre 1992 example and would welcome hearing from anyone with such a car.
Many thanks.
Paul.
