The end of an era.

I wonder for how long GM parts will still be available.

Funny thing is that GM actually has a 7% stake in Groupe PSA, the parent company of Peugeot, Citroën and DS.
So effectively it will still be part owned by GM.

There you go - vauxhalls will soon have dodgy electrics - ha ha.

A wider range of bland euro-boxes.

Most modern cars are now bland, devoid of any real style. So many parent companies using similar drive trains that it almost becomes much of a muchness. There isn't a single car under £30,000 I'd buy - all soulless, bloated, minimal visibility, superfluous gadget-laden plastic lumps. I do not weep for the selling of VX and Opel, all companies are on borrowed time before they become swallowed up by larger manufacturers. Our lack of brand patriotism lost us our car companies.

I agree.

Though, I think a lot of it is to do with car companies trying to please everyone with one model of car.
When you do that cars will inevitably become more similar, even if they were designed by two completely different teams of people.
Every car today has to be aerodynamic, economical, comply with an endless list of regulations, be cheap to make and have all the latest features. If it doesn't, it won't sell.

That said, the occasional new car does catch my eye. The current Mazda 6 for example. That's well under £30,000.
Also probably the only car I can think of that you can buy with a decently sized naturally aspirated petrol engine.

Anyway, the single concern I have with the sell off of Vauxhall is the future availability of old parts.
All the parts are manufactured by GM. Now that Vauxhall are no longer part of GM, will they carry on manufacturing parts or even bother keeping stockpiles of them?

I'd be surprised if Vauxhall are still making parts for the Cavalier full stop - I'm sure we are just buying up old stock.

I think they produce most of it in batches rather than having them made 24/7.

When a part gets low in stock, they fire up a machine in one of their factories and roll off another 1000 or whatever they need.

Obviously allot of parts for the Cav aren't available any more, but a decent amount of them actually are, especially service items like brake pads, bushes, bearings that sort of thing.
I would expect that most of the moulds for parts are still kept somewhere, even if the part hasn't been made in years. Having the original moulds for stuff would make it possible (even if unlikely) for old parts to once again be manufactured.

It was amazing how many parts for my Cav were bought through my main dealer.

Admittedly 90% of the parts state that they are from the Russelheim Opel plant.
So not Vauxhall parts per-se.

If Opel is being kept, then we have nothing to worry about... just buy for an Opel Vectra-A.

But definitely most perishable parts like bolts, rubber bushes and service items are still available.

Many high importance stuff will still be from the same manufacturers... Bosch, Delphi, Elring, Febi-Bilstein and so on.
