Now call me cynical but isn't this a win, win and win again for insurers
Less categories, more scrap, more 'new business'.
They've even called it "the salvage code"
Note how they're trying to tie-in complex ( i.e. electronics) repairs with body shops
Although all cars are subject to this 'dumbing down' I wouldn't like to be a modern car owner.
My interpretation ( bearing in mind that a dented wing could constitute a non-structurally damaged repairable) is that if you've got all that modern non-essential sh"t and it flags an error after an accident like electronic handbrake, stop/start and last but not least my pet hate:
Any car that locks you in when you start driving. What can be less re-assuring than driving a car on a motorway (legal speeds of course) and wondering , If I crash and my battery/ ecu get destroyed, will the doors unlock (as the flames are licking around me ).
- It's time to start looking for a new car after every accident ?
I'm not encouraged by testers being trained 'up to minimum qualifications'
To top it off this is a voluntary code

Re: New insurance write-off categories
Interesting. I wonder how much of a difference this will actually make.
The new categories sound an awful lot like the old ones to me.
