I'm sure we're all aware of the Fb extortion racket by now. Even the bbc news has taken notice today.
Not wishing to clog-up markb's post I've posted here instead. As a stop gap there's a work around to view the images.

In ms edge right click the dial image and open in new tab. This will take you to the pic. ( I tried this with 3 random images from mark's which all worked).
If you're using firefox there's a work around posted by SprueOne here
http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/general_dis ... =4#1962336

Wouldn't it be great if the many thousands of users could organise quitting at the same time?
A site crash and dwindling advertising revenue might make them realise this was a very underhand thing to do.

From 0 - 399 dollars unannounced?
They're just a bunch of greedy baw-bags :p

I see.. Now that is real pathetic. 400 bucks to share some photos... I think they are going to be shut down permanently very soon. Feel sorry for all the people out there whose businesses and long term projects have been ruined, I presume everyone will switch to alternate photo sharing websites now?

Not sure with this one.
At this point in time, my photobucket account is still unaffected.
Saying that though, I only have 160 images uploaded.

Is it just a matter of time before they roll it out across all users?

About 90% of my photobucket images are on my phone or laptop, so it shouldn't take too much to download the other 10%.

Nothing more annoying than finding threads without working links or images.

I have a few How 2s on Vectra-C.com that are missing images that were initially hosted on the forum server.
Without images, those How 2s are meaningless.

Over the years, I have printed many threads to pdf, just in case anything happens to the images or the forum.

Are we sure it isn't another 3rd party hacker?

I can understand a few dollars per year to host images, but 400 dollars is beyond the means of almost every person on the net.

It could well be a hacker job, if they have 100 million users then charging everyone 400 bucks to "upgrade" their account is totally senseless. Even a few bucks per user would generate more than enough profit for them.

My thoughts exactly...
Maybe I have not been chosen yet, as I don't have that many images - so not much to hold me for ransome.

Then again - you never know with these Americans... they have a habit of doing things without thinking of the consequences first.

I pay for their 'Plus 20' service. I have to because I've got over 2000 photos on my account.
But it's only $30 a year, not $399.

I was getting close to my limit so I simply opened another account linked to another hotmail account. My photo bucket is still allowing sharing, just don't ever click on the links on the site as according to my anti virus software some have some nasties burried in them.

Given that this could potentially be a hacker job, I'd be careful about what everyone uploads on there. Never know what some scheming little rodent is looking at on the other side of the web...

I keep all my photos on hard drives (3) as they are generally about 25mb each and would take forever to upload.
I have uploaded some jpeg's to Google Drive but not sure if they can be shared?
That's why I don't put pics up!

I see the reason to doubt and think it's because not everyone has been affected (so far) myself included.
This is probably something to do with not reaching my upload limit yet.
It's not a hack though.
Just google photobucket to see the media backlash if you don't believe the terms laid out in Pb's page.
This is real!
It was so much easier when we could upload directly rather than faff about with 3rd parties and the extra stages involved.
Ahh.....the good old days :)

Unfortunately we just don't have the space any more.

It was ok when people would just upload one or two 640x480 resolution photos.
Now each of my photos is ‎6000 × 4000.

I remember uploading 640x480 photos on here from my old phone, as it had a basic camera on it, but ye, now that everyone has high-resolution cameras, the image sizes and resolutions are too large to upload straight to the forum.

To be honest 640 x 480 is adequate for most image requirements on a forum.

But storage of images on the forum database means that a larger server space is required, which in turn increases running costs and band width.

All previous direct upload images have been kept on the site...
But all images posted since the change of forum format a couple of years ago can only be hosted via a third party site.

I understand the reasons and wasn't complaining, just reminiscing !

You get to a certain age and then nostalgia kicks in.
If It wasn't for nostalgia I wouldn't love cavaliers :D

Still a crap deal from Photobucket though

I've just had the email off them saying I've got to pay, interestingly though it's only on my almost empty account. No problem I'll just start using Flickr instead. I wonder how many other users will do the same and their remaining advertising revenue will just drop.

My images were gone last night and I got the email upgrade demand twice today.

Ah well, bye-bye Photobucket

There's alway a motive to the marketing plan - just like the cup being half full or half empty!?

Some user will stay others will go. But the end party don't care... as they already hooked many

Anyways In a nutshell it's free advertising / marketing tactics

Well - for whatever reason, it lost them my account

500 Pictures and account deleted...
I guess I spat my dummy out in disgust.

I only used photobucket for 3rd party posting.
So without that, it was no longer needed.

Bye bye... :pram
