Looking Back at 24 1/2 years of Documents.

Post by Robsey »

I decided to put my newest MOT certificate away in the car documents folder.

It was here that I realised how documents have changed.

-------------------------------

V5 / V5C.

Firstly was the V5 or "log book" as it used to be called.

I have the original purchase V5 from December 1995, when I bought the car for the missus

A few years later, the V5 was replaced by a V5C.
The V5Cs started out blue, and then in later years became red.

Here is my array of V5 / V5C's.
Top left - V5, Top right - Blue V5C
Bottom - Red V5C.

Apologies, I have only uploaded low resolution images, to hide private information.

--------------------------

MOT Certificates, Advisories and Failures (Refusals).

In the early days, my certificates were coloured pieces of A5 paper with hand written details.
The colour and layout changed twice before a major change in size and layout occurred.

The next phase of VT20 sheets were A4 in size, and took on a distinct colour scheme.
Green for Pass, Orange for Advisory notice, and Red for a Refusal to issue a certificate (Fail notice).
These were all printed, with only the signature being hand-written

The printing of certificates coincides with the storage of test results on the DVLA / VOSA database. And which you are now able to view on the Direct.gov website under vehicle MOT history.

Then things got boring.
Both Certificates and Refusal notices became plain white A4 sheets and black printed text.
The sheets are horizontal (landscape) in orientation and carry the initials VOSA at the top.

The next incarnation changed to vertical (portrait) orientation, and lost the bold VOSA heading.
It became headed with "Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency".
Both Certificate and Refusal notice were still black print on white A4 paper.

And since mid-2018, it has changed again.

My Original Owner's Pack.

Looking back, there was / is a booklet in the pack about vehicle security systems installed on the Cavalier range.
Our car had nothing fitted when I bought it.
We had to retro fit an alarm approx 4 months after we got the car.

The booklets included in the pack are,
The Cavalier Driver's Manual. - TS1237-B-94
Cavalier Vehicle Security booklet - TS1377-A-94.
Vauxhall Assistance booklet - TS1424
Vauxhall Audio Manual - TS1284-A-94.
The Car Pass.
And about 6 "filofax" add-in info cards.

Image

If we look at the audio manual, the part number is made up from three components.

"TS1284-" refers to an audio manual.
"-A-" refers to the first release of that model year.
( B would be first update, C would be second update of that model year).
And "-94" is the model year.

------------------------------

So there you go...
24 1/2 years of car documents.

It is nice having a look back now and again. It amazes you as to what you had forgotten about, and how things change.

Like a paperwork equivalent of a WIP thread.
