How many MK3 Cavaliers are left today?

Post by SRiGUY93 »

I have looked on How Many Left but I've heard they're inaccurate and I don't really trust them 100% myself. Does anybody on here keep count on the amount of cars left or have a register of some sorts? It would be cool to see how many are left, especially the SRi, GSi and turbo models.

I looked yesterday, and it is quite vague, plus about 6 months out of date.

On top of this, there will be lots of cars that do not match their factory specification.

For example, my car left the factory in 1994 as a 1796cc LSi hatchback.
The most common facelift cavalier produced.

But some 26 years later, it is a 1998cc unbadged hatchback with various upgrade parts from other higher spec models.
(DVLA were advised of engine change in 2012, but chose not to update their records).

I find it odd to see four 2.1 litre Cavalier LS's, as those were never made.

So looking at the listings and using my factory spec as an example.
Data for the fourth quarter of 2019.

Unsurprisingly, it does show far more 1800 LS cars than all the other models combined. Mostly from 1994 and 1995.

196 1.8 LS on the road,
529 1.8 LS on SORN.

Combine with that
118 LS's registered in 1994 on the road.
296 LS's from 1994 on SORN.

no exact way to define which are 1994 1.8 LS models.
Make of that what you will.

I suspect most interested people that ask about "rarity" will be referring to the more revered models like the 4x4 turbo, or pre-facelift GSi, pre-facelift SRi, Diplomat, Cesaro etc.

Update -
I have done a table covering petrol LS cars.
With 48 calculated outcomes, it is unlikely to be any more accurate, but gives a probability of how many of each engine size per model year there is. (Licensed / Taxed, SORNed and Overall).

Sheesh...

I could do a listing of the SRi, GSi etc if necessary...

Update - just found a listing for an SRi 16valve with an engine below 1 litre capacity ... yeah, whatever. :roll:

Three SRi 16v registered in 1997 but all on SORN. :scratch

Oh and an SR-I Auto registered in 2004.
I presume it is a mk2 barn find, that was put back on the road in 2004.

So much quicker to do all those than my LS listing.

Yeah you have a point, there isn't a way to get a 100% accurate number, unless you went around counting everybody's Cavaliers (which would take ages :) )There are obviously going to be way more LS, GLS, GLi etc. models left than any other models of Cavalier. Which I'm not complaining about, as long as there's still a good amount left. But I am more curious of the rarity of the GSi and SRi 16v. For example there are obviously more 8v SRi's left than 16v and more 2WD GSi's than 4x4 ones and so on.

I was reading this thread yesterday and it sparked my curiosity: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=5248
and considering it's 9 years old the Cavaliers have obviously dwindled in numbers since then.

And 2.1 LS Cavaliers lol? I don't think they exist at all, which reminds my dad told me he scrapped an SRi 4x4 face-lift when he worked at a scrapyard in around '06-'07, I really don't know if they exist but he claims he put it on ramps and it was a whole 4x4 system, and it had 4x4 badges as well as SRi ones on the door and boot. Only logical explanation I can think of is a conversion. :?

There are a lot more SORN'ed GSi's than I would have expected.

I will post up figures later: -
For GSi (all pre-facelift), SRI, 4X4 and Turbos.

What I've found with howmanyleft is that the data can be out due to DVLA and the way in which they record the model of a particular vehicle. My Astra Van you would of thought would be recorded as a Bedford Astra Van LD, which there are some on the site, however it is down on the log book as Bedford Car Derived Van, which also has a listing. How many left also doesn't distinguish between mk 1 and 2's plus the last of the mk2's were called Vauxhall Astra van's, so were all subsequent models...So unless you can find out every variation that DVLA has used you won't get an accurate figure.

Agreed - like I have said, my car is totally mis-represented.

It is still listed as a taxed 1.8 LS hatch.
In reality it is a 2.0 mixed spec hatch on SORN.
All due to dvla inaccuracies.

I felt like this had gone well off topic (completely my fault) so I've moved all the stuff about similarities between the 4x4 and SRi Here:

So my 90 GSI is one of only 4 taxed what does that make it worth ?
There was a list of Cesaro's / Motorsports started on here but with only 7 entries the last one in 2014 how many of them are still alive ?

Is that Cesaro or Auto.

Just Cesaro -
1800cc = 1 taxed and 9 on SORN
2.5 V6 = 1 taxed and 3 on SORN.

1994 = 2 on SORN
1993 = 2 taxed and 10 on SORN.

Cesaro Auto -
2.5 V6 = 3 taxed and 7 on SORN.
1995 = 1 on SORN
1994 = 1 taxed and 1 on SORN.
1993 = 2 taxed and 5 on SORN.

-------------------------------

Motorsport -
1800cc = 11 taxed and 31 on SORN
2.5 V6 = 1 on SORN

1994 = 2 taxed and 3 on SORN
1993 = 9 taxed and 28 on SORN.

again, make of that what you will.

Judging by these figures I seem to own 2 very rare models all by accident though.
