Soo...parts hoarding

So, today i am mostly going through my car part sheds...

Lots of memorys in there.. road trips attached to parts i have collected over the years. Time for them to find a new home.

Majority if them Cavalier mk3.

Fun times and also a bit sad too

It is amazing how many parts you can collect over a ten year period.

Today?
Not a lot today, too blummin' cold and windy despite the bright sunshine.
All I have managed to do, is give a proper clean of the van parts that I mentioned last week.

I would get a lot more done if I could bring the van engine into our nice warm kitchen.

Apparently the missus wouldn't object, as I do all the kitchen type stuff - lol.
My own common sense realises that there would not be a lot of space left if I did bring it indoors.

I have too many parts

I could do with having a jolly good sort out.

I have had a few half hearted attempts over the years but never got further than grouping all the parts of each type together.

I'd like to do a full inventory on a spreadsheet. Then if I find myself needing a part I can check easily if I already have it.
I now live about 25 miles away from where the majority of all my parts are so I can't just pop into the garage anymore and check.

Aye, I can relate, though thankfully its only a mile or so for me.
But that said, needing parts isn't really a thing for me anymore sadly.

I bought a load of those big clear storage boxes when they were cheap at poundland (or similar), and just dumped common things in them, like one for hoses, one for electrical. Cant remember what's in them, but it narrows it down a bit when hunting for parts.

I've done exactly the same thing! And I thought it was only me that was so disorganised, so I'm glad to hear of someone else who's had to do this.

I'm doing that now. I've forgotten what's in them although I now write on the boxed parts or envelopes in marker, helps a little.

I think it starts when you commit to a chosen car.
I've got over twenty years of mk3 parts bought because the were a bargain at the time and might be needed. Not to mention all the stuff that i thought would be cool mods, only to realise years later that i prefer mainly original, DRL's with sweeping indicators anyone? .

I think it is a car enthusiast thing, although it was the mk3 Cavalier that brought out the hoarder in me.

Oh boy - me again..
I have kept parts from old cars,
And bought potentially useful gadgets.

From time to time I have bought a job lot, just because I was looking for one part out of the ten within the sale.

I have multiple locations around my home full of vehicle parts -
The categories include:-
1980 Toyota Corolla KE70
1983 VW Transporter with 1987 electrics
1986 Austin Maestro.
1987 Cavalier mk2 saloon -
1994 Cavalier mk3
2005 Vectra-C

Then there are 20+ Haynes manuals, Autodata,
About 10 different radios,
2 cd changers
3 nokia blue tooth kits
Vectra-b roof racks
And a full set of used Cavalier LSi grey seats still in the boxes they were delivered in.
My rotted out n.s.r Cav mk3 door.
And a transporter tailgate.

Do I win ?

Hmm - guilty as charged.
The down-side is that after three days, I am still only 1/3rd the way into the shed.

I still need to get round to listing stuff. I need stuff gone but refuse to just "dispose" of it.

I feel that about the most useless off-cut of wiring loom.
I have connectors and cables that simply do not fit anything -
I store them in a 'spare' wheelie bin, rather than getting rid.
Dare I say that the bin is full to the top...

Aye, I have several MK3 body looms lingering around, will have to go through them and see if any are salable

I seem to think I have one of your floor looms here, along with a pair of front door looms.

Having a bit of a sort does help in many ways -
I had a head-scratching moment yesterday when I was looking at the main front-to-back loom for the van.
I was looking at my "D" connector where I was planning to populate two pins for the indicators output from the alarm... but when I looked, they were already populated and terminated via a VW 3-pin connector.

Sorting through another box today, I found the Maestro Digidash adapter loom, lo-and-behold, a matching 3-pin connector - the penny dropped. I had already prepared the body loom to provide separate indicator outputs for the Digidash, and a third spur-wire for the hand-brake.

That is the problem with having these crazy ideas and then abandoning them at a later date.
It doesn't take much to confuse a senile old fart like me.
