Breakdown & Recovery

Post by carlos_canter »

So this isnt directly related to a cavalier, but seeing as i had trouble with mine, it is in a way(?)

Now that ive got a decent "bus", id thought id get breakdown cover, Im ok in the area and as long as work isnt to busy, but what if i went further afield?

So i rang round all the people we work for, AA, RAC, Green Flag, IPA etc, AA and RAC quoted me stupid money, even after explaining im a contractor so they went out the window, Green Flag, would only cover my car for a year due to its age - 14.

They only cover cars upto 15 years old, i even explained to him that in 5 years ive only ever been to a single cavalier and that had been in a smash(still sat in our yard 3 month later).

I did a google for classic car recovery, and found these http://www.vehiclebreakdown.org.uk/vehi ... kdown.html
6 home call outs a year, Nationwide recovery, blah blah blah, all for the orincley sum of £52.50 - bloody bargain!

A point worth mentioning : if you get your breakdown cover through the bank or free with your insurance, check it carefully, you may only be entitled to 10mile recovery and no home start. Has caused alot of trouble with members ive been out to.

So has any one else had trouble getting breakdown cover?

I'm insured with direct line, and I took the breakdown cover that they offered me with my insurance. It is only 10 miles, but I knew that when I bought it, and they have more comprehensive (and expensive) policies. They have been very good this last couple of weeks where I have needed to use the service twice. I would recommend it to others, although I don't think that it is as cheap as your recovery.

Least you read the small print & understood the conditions.

Alot dont and it usually ends up with us taking them to the nearest services, or, if they refuse to pay at the destination, we take there car hostage.

i have complimentary AA cover with the bank, comprehensive service. i also now have it as part of my cavalier (classic) insurance package. and to top that off the father in law dropped round an RAC card the other day as he could name some other family members on the policy! so i think we're fairly well covered.

i've used the AA a number of times and theyre so quick to respond. once i had them out for a snapped alternator belt on a mk3 astra that mrs ilovemyelite was driving. wasn't the AA, but a local sub-AA truck that came out. they stocked a load of parts on the van so fitted new belt at roadside and off we went. superb.

Thats what we do, we sub contract for the AA, usually if it means them getting hands dirty they pass it to us, or if they just cant be bothered!

I always enjoy getting on over on the AA though, especially when they knock vauxhalls for steering columns on a hot day!

I have just swapped my breackdown cover from the RAC (very pricey) to GEM recovery (http://www.motoringassist.com/home.aspx) not had to call them out (yet!) but very impressed so far and much much cheaper.
Is it supposed to do that?

ive had rac cover for the last few years but im probably going to go elsewhere as the price is getting too much but i cant fault the service, they cover whatever car im in not just the one i own. used them twice, once in my nova when my rear wheel bearing exploded on the m25 and second when i was in another car and the cooling system went. took me exactly where i wanted to go and helpful and polite people.
cars to date
Nova 1.0, omega 2.0 16v manual, carlton diplomat, cavailer GL 2.0i, omega 2.0 16v auto, nova 1.2.
Current car, blue cavalier 2.0 sri 8v, Red cav sri 8v now stripped+gone vx4/90 arrived!

complete cav sri interior up for grabs
