MOT time

Post by Chris P Dash »

Just had the dreaded MOT - and she has flown through!! :D - just a small problem with emissions, sorted with some engine additive. Other than that all clear...
Is it supposed to do that?

Not bad at all. CV boots are just one of those unpredictable things. Had the sodding problem with my Cav last year, bought a universal kit and its rubbish but it does the job...sort of..
As for a friend of mine, he's recently bought an 03 plate TT, and guess what, CV boot came off didnt it. There was no grease on the shaft itself, it was all sprayed on the inside of the wheel. Luckily i noticed it at my place, so i had the tools to do the job. Apparently it went through the MOT just before he bought it so whats up with that. Sodding things really in my opinion, those boots.

Not sure what was added - the garage added it and my wife collected the car and didn't ask what it was... I curious to find out too, will have to call in and find out sometime.

Don't suppose anyone has any suggestions on what I can do to improve the emissions further?

they probably just passed it anyway and charged you extra for additive that they never added in the first place or is that just me being cynical. going on past experience of a local garage near me that will never be used again.

Well the garage probably used Redex because it tends to be the cheapest additive available. I use STP injector and fuel system additives, can't say they've put me wrong so far. Other than that, just keep everything clear, air filter, breather hoses, make sure the plugs, leads and oil are in generally good order, and give her a good smooth long run every now and then. those are the general top tips to follow on.

General good service items,

Filters, and plugs etc. Fresh clean engine oil, coolant. and so on...you get the idea.

Clean all breather pipes and gauze filter in the cam housing cover.

For more indepth ideas, then you could ensure that your sensors are all clean and working properly. MAF / MAP sensor, Idle Control Valve, Coolant Temperature Sensor, Check / Clean or blank-off the EGR valve

Finally check that you have no air leaks into any of the vacuum pipes, or into any of your manifold joint gaskets.
