Maybe another cav down :(

Post by Envoy CDX »

Well, on Wednesday morning, someone went into the back passenger side of me, cracking the bumper, pushing it off it's hanger, snapping the studs for the hanger off, and I suspect pushing the rear door gap closed slightly.

I'm still a bit sore in places, and still rather annoyed.

No pictures of the damage yet, just haven't had the time with work and such.

Cav's still drivable, just not sure what I'm going to do yet..

Must have been some speed, these cars don't let up from behind.
Sorry to hear about the accident, all the best with your plans from now on.

No, nothing looks bent from the outside, however - the rear door seems to overlook the rear dogleg a bit more, I will try and get some pictures tomorrow.

If anyone has any shots of the passenger side rear panel gapping I'd appreciate a goodsee.

As said in my PM and on MSN,

If there is structural damage, it is most likely that the inner wing / skin will be rippled or creased.

Something has to be bent for the panel gap to be reduced..

Hmmm - maybe a time to revert to refurbing smokey instead

not that you wanna hear it, but if the accident results in the car being written off on economical grounds rather than structural grounds it might be worth allowing that to happen, take the cash, then buy the car back for peanuts from the insurers as a cat d. happens a lot.

Seem to remember that it gets harder to insure it again then though. Wife works in insurance and has mentioned that a few times.

Well, my friend Steve came over today, and some inspection was done.
Knocked the rear panel straight around where the bumper sits, stripped the colour coding bit off the bumper and stuck it on a known ok bumper for now.

Refitted the bumper and it sits so much better.

Did you check the panel alignment ?

It is this that will decide whether the car is scrap or not..

Compare the suspect side to the opposite side of the car, or even smokey's.

A severe impact, should also be slightly visible in the large roof skin.
Look at how the light reflects along / across the entire roof section.

cavs are strong as hell on the back. as long as it tracks up fine there shouldnt be a real issue.

a pic would help

I think it looks worse than it sounds to be honest. Looking at it, it's only a new bumper and checking the underside. The boot surrounding looks straight enough, once you refit the seal. Definitely not a write-off.

Looks good from here Gary.

I too have had a few shunts up the rear - the joys of a tow-bar means that only their front ends get trashed :D

Soon have the old boy up and running ... :thumb
