As the title says the waterpump has failed and I'm not sure if the car is worth repairing . I've owned the vehicle for 8 years with no problems untill this happened. So really I'm looking for suggestions as what to do next i.e scrap, sell it as sale or repair or repair it myself? The cars only covered 65K approx and in A1 condition inside and out apart from the engine that is .Any help and advice would be very much appreciated.
I've been told that the head is possibly gone so I would be spending money for nothing, not being mechanically minded I'm not sure what to do.
It may be time to say goodbye and look for a replacement.
Always worth putting a belt and pump on an 8v. Worst case would be a set of valves, but often only a couple and sometimes they survive without valve damage. Think I only ever saw one that had damaged guides. If the car is good it's worth spending the money. Even if the engine overheated rather than throwing the belt, I'd still go for it. Where are you, maybe someone here can help you?
"No the temperature gauge doesn't work........
we've driven 150 miles today........
the heater went cold last Thursday........
they check the level when it's serviced don't they?"
agreed the 8v engine are bomb proof, my e16se (1.6 gsi) the cam seized on that and the valves was fine, change cam and carried new timing belt and away it went

Just like to say thanks for all your replys but after carefull consideration I'm afraid I'm going to scrap my car as I can't spare any cash on the possibility the repair is unsuccessfull, so I will be ringing around to see what scrapyard's are willing to give me tomorrow.
Worst case is a head skim, a flush of the oil and water systems with new belt and pump and turn the key... these engines are fantastically tough little buggers. The head HAS to be removed to check gaskets and potential damage.
The worst realistic case is a warped head and blown head gasket, you've probably cooked the block nicely running for a mile or so with no water, but it ran...

Gaz loses sleep for my car and helps me with parts at ungodly hours of the day. Awesome
Cheers all but decided it's got to go, it's been a great car to own and drive over the past 7 years but it's time for a change so will either list on Ebay spares or repair or ring around the scrapyards.
