I read an article some years back in a 4x4 magazine..... Zone theory.... where any dropped or lost item disappears into 'The Zone' and cannot be found, only to magically reappear right before your eyes following extensive hardship in obtaining a replacement. The laws of the zone are completely unrelated to those of physics and can include, but not limited to, a nut, bolt or washer travelling 30 feet or more horizontally to the most inaccessible location available at the time.

Been there so many times,

oh crap where was that nut???
turns out it was in the socket bit

Don't know about any zone theories, but It's always where you don't think of looking is where the item lies.

When I worked in the dealer, it would have been 1994, L reg, I had a police senator 24v pulled in on a truck. It had 72 miles on the clock and someone had dropped a washer in the inlet when the engine was being built. The washer entered no2 just as they took off down the slip road in pursuit of someone on the m25. It smashed the crap out of the head, and wrecked the piston which came as a balanced set, and I seem to remember it ended up with a set of rods aswell for some reason. Mega amounts of labour but still cheaper than replacement engine. Vauxhall motors obviously paid the bill.

If I ever drop anything while working under the bonnet I instantly freeze and say "nobody move" then listen for the distinctive noise of it hitting the floor. And if its something small it never hits the floor and most of the time goes into 'the zone' theory that was mentioned before lol
