Interior light upgrade wiring

Post by dorsetdave »

I have a 1993 LS 2.0 auto saloon.

I want to upgrade the interior light to one that has reading lights.

My car has only two terminals but the upgraded light has four.

From right to left they are:-

Far right female connector
next left medium spade connector
next left large spade connector
far left small spade connector

Can anyone let me what each of these connectors does? i.e. what are they connected to or what is their individual purpose.

Haynes manual does not seem to help.

Thanks for looking.

Regards,

Dave

From memory you use the 2 existing cables can't remember where they go, then small spade connector is a local earth & then you need to pull in an ignition switched live. not much help need to have a look at one.

Strange - my 1994 LSi (manual)
Has all four terminals.

Black for ignition live (terminal 15)
Red for permant live (terminal 30)
Brown for ground (terminal 31)
Grey for door contact. (terminal tks).

TKS roughly translates to door contact switch. (Tur Kontact Schalter)

Look on your interior light circuit board.
The connectors are labelled.

Thanks for your help. The upgraded lamp came via a well known auction site. Alas the p.c.b. was damaged.
I have just purchased another one which has the cables on it. The colours are as per the information given.
Can anyone tell me how to run the extra cables from the roof area down to a supply area?
I was wondering if the side coverings at the side of the windscreen lift off. If so, what's the best way to do it.

Thanks everyone for looking and hopefully for further information.

Yes, the A-trim pillars pull off, they are held on with clips, when I removed mine, I carefully pried at the inner edge, where it meets the door seal, that loosened it up, then grab the top edge with your fingers, and carefully but firmly pull straight from the A pillar. They go back on with a knock once the clips are lined up.

Thanks for the reply about the A post trim removal.

The interior lights with the reading lights for Cavaliers were not easy to find but if you search under Omega there were plenty. Just make sure that you get the correct shaped one for your car.

I guess most Omegas were fitted with reading lamps whereas the Cavaliers weren't.

Pretty much, although higher spec Cavaliers were fitted with them.

Omegas were fitted with 'bug eye' reading lamps that you can swivel and move into position.

Front reading lamps were available from the start of production in all GL, CD, Diplomat and GSi models and were introduced to the SRi in 1991. For the facelift all GLS, CD, CDX, SRi, Diplomat and Turbo models were fitted with them.

So I would say a good chunk of them were fitted with front reading lamps due to them being fitted on the popular GL and GLS. Rear ones are quite allot rarer however.

Rear reading lamps were first made available for the 1992 model year on CD, Diplomat and GSI models only. They continued in the CD, CDX, Diplomat and Turbo in the facelift.

Thanks everyone for your help.
The upgraded light is in position and working fine.
I managed to fit it without resorting to removing trim for the cables and will put a separate post on how it was done. I did have a look at a mates 1995 2.0 GLS auto and although the brochure shows that reading lamps were fitted in the front his car did not have them. The car is original so it seems unlikely that they had been removed. The extra wires were in place in the light aperture but were taped off. It would have been even easier if mine had the extra wiring.
Thanks again everyone.
