1.7td alternator issues

Post by hreyfill »

hey all

longtime reader but first time poster.

to start with ive got a iszuz 1.7td cav from 94.

a short while ago i started having starting problems, with the battery discharging within a few hours, so after replacing the battery, having the same problem, i narrowed it down to the alternator which was overcharging.

have replaced the alternator with a brand new one, and now i am still getting warning lights on the dash (!) and battery symbol, i have checked the voltage being given off the alternator and thats a steady 14.6 at all speeds except idle.

any body got ideas about what the warning lights are trying to tell me.

ive done a little research but cant get a solution.

so far i have
* had the battery disconnected for a period of time in hope to reset any car memory
* checked fuses
* re-checked everything with the alternator

i am currently leaving the battery disconnected for a longer period of time (going into town to watch a film), and if nobody has any better ideas try a different battery and not my original old one.

i also have not changed the charging relay, ive read this was a good idea, but cant seam to find many people doing it now.

does the engine have a fault memory or is it just a petrol thing and im wrongly assuming its on the diesels as well.

thanks for any help,

mike

Welcome to the site. Check the brake fluid level/sensor, the (!) symbol is related to this and I seem to recall it can bring on the battery light (although it might be the other way around?). Failing that a check of all fuses and replacement charge relay sounds good

the heater went cold last Thursday........
they check the level when it's serviced don't they?"

I second Paul on that, the amount of times we changed an alternator, then the battery light stayed on - 90% of the time it needed a charging relay!!

you were right it was the charging relay after all, swapped it and alls fine . . .

well apart from what amperage should it be ?

got a 30/40amp from the muckanic at work, but am a little worried as ive read the original cav one is 16 amp, and the replacement wehrle ones (on ebay) are 20/30.

i dont want to fry anything so a little advice would be worthwhile, the muckanic said it'd be fine, however i.m.o. he's somewhat half assed about things.

Higher amps is fine for this

its behind the kick panel (the plastic panel to the right of your bonnet release lever)

you'll find two relays, a yellow one and a black one, the black is the charging relay.

you can replace it briefly with the fan relay which is in the black box in the engine bay (the one with all the big fuses)

anyways thanks for all your help guys, my cav is happily on the road again for the time being, now just waiting for nice weather to get a few rusty areas sorted and give it a decent clean inside and out.
