Pretty sure I've got a brand new one sitting in the garage.VauxhallGirl wrote:If anyone knows where I can get the above linked alternator for a lot less than £120, would be grateful. Then I can really say I have a source.

Re: help needed with my 17 td alternator
Got the alternator off and got it stripped down and fixed by a local auto electrician. Now back on the car. Have to wait and see if all is ok now.
Interestingly, the guy said owners of the Turbo Diesel Cavs should make a couple of other checks to make sure it's not something else wrong. So I thought I would share them here, in case they are of help to others.
Check the operation of the charging relay.
Check the operation of the glow plug relay.
Check the condition of the resistor in the loom.
"Failure of any of the above things will result in the replacement alternator appearing to not function correctly."
Symptom are...
The warning light stays on.
The warning light will only go out when the engine revs above 3000rpm
The alternator will not charge.
Hope that is of some help to someone, somewhen.
If you are anywhere near the Hants/Sussex border, this guy could be useful. Will get his name, etc.
