Cig lighter blew fuse, no charging, no ignition lights

Post by cavalier1990 »

Hi

This was a really crazy one that happened today. I was trying to use the cig lighter and I noticed as soon as I pressed it in that the rev counter and the temp/fuel gauges seemed to drop to the bottom. After doing this I was still driving and noticed the batter y light was now on.

I got home and started checking charging rate, which was not working, and ignition lights were now completely gone, but could still start.

I then checked fuses and the fuse about 3 or 4 in at top row was blown, a 20 AMP one. Replacing this restored the charging and ign. lights and gauges worked again. I had cig lighter out to check wiring and couldn't see anything obvious. I'm assuming this is part of the same circuit so perhaps the lighter itself is gubbed and has shorted out?

Anyone else suffered this one?

The cigar lighter is fuse 2.

After a little trawling through Haynes manual, it is noted that fuse 2 also feeds the instrument cluster on pin 9.

but you will not see that detail in the manual.

Looks like I need to update my fuse thread.

Avoid using the lighter in future, probably the easiest thing to do. Sorry I cant be off any proper assistance

Either that or fit a replacement Cig lighter and / or socket.

I plan to fit a Vectra-C charge socket with cover cap to my Cav.
I only use it for powering or charging electronic gadgets.
Phones, sat navs and video cameras.

When I have rebuilt my dash panel that is.
