Good Morning All

Got a weird problem with the windows on the cavalier this morning.

Basically the electric windows have stopped working. However if you open the door the windows will work. As soon as you close the door the windows stop working again?

Anybody ever had this before?

Have you blown a fuse -?

Sounds like the ignition live control wire has no power feed.

Or have you disconnected the battery?
If you have, then you need to re-synchronise the windows.

Standard procedure is to power the windows up to the close position - and continue to press the closed button for a further 5 seconds.

Repeat for all powered windows.

But I am still ceetain it is the ignition live feed - or it's fuse.

Try fuse 12...
It may fix you door mirrors too

(They are both on fuse 12).

I Shall give it a go, just confused as to how they are working when I open the door?

The drivers door thing is the same on all the cavs I’ve owned it’s not a fault, what happens when you turn the ignition on ?

Maybe also a broken cable inside door hinge.

Fuse 12 is ignition live only.

The front and rear windows also have a much higher fuse rated permanent live feed from fuses 26 and 30.

The driver's door pin switch provides a 12v trigger when the door is open.
(Same as for interior light).
You should see the switch lights illuminate either with the door open, or
If you open the door, turn the ignition on, then off.. but do not reopen the door.
Or have the ignition on.

pulled the number 12 fuse tonight. Fuse was blown. Locked and unlocked the car and the fuse blew again.

I pulled the mirror switch out, replaced the fuse and tried it again. The windows work when the mirror switch is not connected, so looks as though fault with mirror switch

At least the windows are sorted

As for the mirror switch, it is a very basic device, so should be easy to inspect for damage to the wire insulation etc.

Or you may have to get a test meter / AVO on your mirror connector to see if the wiring, heater element or mirror motors are shorted out.

(Bear in mind that both heater elements and motor windings will have a very low resistance value - but not virtually 0 ohms.)

I think it could be a damaged switch as the actual movement of the switch does not seem to be smooth.

I keep wondering if it is one of the little pin things not sitting correctly when I put the switch back together?

It is a very simple set up...
So not a lot to go wrong.

I took it back apart, yet to try it back in the car though. I think possibly one of the little cap things wasn't sitting correctly when I put it back together
