Heater control bulb

Post by dorsetdave »

Can anyone tell me what sort of bulb I need to replace the one that's quit. Local parts house can't find a listing for it.
Thanks for looking.

It is a single 1.2 watt bulb as fitted to a lot of dash tell tale lights.

The generic code for it is a "286" bulb.
Any car parts shop / motor factors / Halfords etc; will stock them.

After changing mine a couple of years ago I decided that I could probably live without it!
Can't believe what's involved to change a bulb!

Indeed it is a pain of a job, for a bulb that doesn't do very much.

That is why I fitted half-a-dozen LEDs to my heater panel.

I did try a couple of led bulbs in the dash of my Mk5 Cortina (sorry it's Ford!) Estate about four years ago. They were worse so I swapped them back. There must be different qualities and performances of these bulbs. Maybe I should try again. The Cavalier standard dashboard illumination is far better than on my Cortina. The one thing that is better on the Ford is that I can turn the Factory radio on with the ignition off. My 94 Cavalier with the original Blaupunkt CD player doesn't allow it for some reason. I don't remember this being the case on my Company Cavaliers in the 80s & 90s but I can't recall having one with a Blaupunkt system.

The radio should indeed turn on for 1hr with the ignition off.

All my Cavalier radios have done this.

Do you lose radio stations, code and settings when you turn off the ignition?
If so, your permanent live feed may be faulty.
Red wire to pin 8 of the ISO connector.

Or the connections to the ISO plug have been swapped between the red on pin 8 (battery live) and the black on pin 2 (ignition live).
A very common practice when fitting after-market radios.

The relevant fuses for the Radio are: -

Fuse 8 = 15 amps, battery live.
Also feeds the clock, dual info display, board computer, hazards and interior lights.

Fuse 20 = 10 amps, ignition live.
For the radio only.

Apologies for the slight diversion in topic.

No Robsey, it does not loose it's stations. I will check it's wiring when I get the car back from it's service. Thanks for your help.
