Fan works on the high speed only

Post by mo_ayman »

Hi all,

My radiator fan started to work lately on the high speed only.

I went ahead and replaced the sensor located in the radiator side which has a 3 wire connector. The problem remained though.

What happens exactly is that the radiator fan starts at 95 degrees on the high speed and stops after the temp is 90 or so.

The fan never works on the slower speed.

Is there something else that I should check other than that sensor?

Are there any diagnostic steps that I should do?

This is the one I have just put on: https://cdn.autoteiledirekt.de/thumb?id ... f=21876002

If it is a two speed radiator fan, there are a few components to consider.
Assuming you have:-
Air Conditioning, or a
Diesel / Turbo Diesel, or
V6 engine...

There are three fuses.
F2 - 20 amps, ignition live.
(Found in the dash fuse box)

F34 - 30 amps for low speed fan.
F42 - 40 amp maxi fuse for high speed fan
(Should be found in the engine bay fuse box)

There are three relays.
K51 - Ignition live control.
K52 - High Speed Fan relay.
K67 - Low Speed Fan relay.
(Relays should be in engine bay fuse box although dependent upon model / equipment, some relays are tucked under the dash on a "relay frame" behind the fuse box)

I hope that helps.

If you have air conditioning, turn this on.
It should run the radiator cooling fan at low speed, whenever the engine is running, regardless of coolant temperature.

Well,

Thanks a lot for the info. I will check them out and let you know how it went.

It's a C16NZ with air con.

I am wondering though what is the other switch used for, the switch I am talking about is the 2 wire plug located in the radiator side housing right below the fan temperature switch I just changed.

I have always thought that one is for the low speed and the other is for the high speed. The parts shop guy told me that the 3 wire plug one controls both fan speeds which made sense as they are 3 wires one for each speed + ground.

I have had a look for anything to do with the radiator.

The 2 speed switch should have 3 wires.
Designated switch S88.
A brown / white wire (2.5mm csa) low speed.
A brown / yellow wire (4mm csa) high speed
A brown wire (4mm csa) to ground.

I can see a one speed, two pin switch with brown/yellow and brown wires.
Designated S29. But I cannot see why it would need both on your car.

The wiring diagrams in Haynes are quite confusing, as there are:-
One diesel version, and
Three air conditioning versions, and
One C25XE version.

There are versions with one blower motor M4
and versions with two blower motors...
M4 and M11.

Then there are versions with relays K51, K52 and K67...
And other versions with K51, K67 and K87.

This is where I miss having a working laptop with TIS200 / GlobalTIS.

Well, I would like to thank you a lot for the info.

Fortunately, it worked on its own when I tried to diagnose the issue.

I believe that I was a fool when I first checked if it worked. It was getting kinda late and dark that day.

I would like to thank you again for the info it would be really helpful if I face any issues again with the radiator fan. Cooling is crucial for me, it gets really hot here when it's summer. :D
