CAV V6 NO ELECTRICS.

Post by cav24v »

I fitted a 2nd hand cooling fan on my v6 today today but got the wires the wrong way round (the plug had long ago disintegrated hence the crossed wires) so when I tried to start the car I must have tripped a fuse, simple fix you might think but I've checked all the fuse in the fuse box and the 3 in the box under the bonnet and all are fine.
I have no electrics whatsoever which is a bit of a pain because I had the drivers window down at the time.
Are there any other fuses controlling electrics that I don't know about.
I know some cars have a fuse on the starter motor but I didn't think the cavs did.
Any ideas?

No electrics at all?

That is odd.
The only thing that would do that is if the battery was not connected.
Or connected the wrong way round.

Everything other than the alarm feed is fuse protected. And so only indevidual circuits will be killed by a wiring issue like that.

The fuse for the fan is indeed in the engine bay fuse box (as with any air con equipped cavalier).

I would re-check your wiring, concentrating on the battery, starter and alternator terminals.

Thinking laterally, the only other thing that would kill all the electrics is a worn out ignition switch.

But surely you would still have lights?

If it is a battery connection, you would have nothing.
Consider all earth links as well as battery live feeds.

If it is an ignition switch issue, then the lights (interior and exterior)should indeed come on.

So I get back today and go to check some connections ie battery and for some reason I have power again, looks like it came back 10 mins earlier because the clock was reading 00:10.
So she starts up and the fan checks out.
I'm pleased to have her running again but I'd rather know what happened so I can be confident that it won't happen again.
Incidentally that was about 24hrs from when it went so does that mean there is something that tripped then reset itself after 24hrs?
Anyone know?
Thanks for your help.

Sorry, I have no idea,
Maybe a loose battery lead or something.

No I checked the battery leads before I got back in the car and noticed that there was power again.
First thing I did then was close the window.

Good plan... :thumb

But it is very baffling that there is no rhyme nor reason for the total loss of power.

Yeah, the last thing I need is another intermittent problem. :wall
It took weeks and quite a bit of money to sort the last one also I've only had her back on the road for the last year (problems allowing) after her being off for about 4 years.
