Hammerite Waxoyl
Hey all
I saw some cheap cans of Hammerite Waxoyl for sale in Halfords, so i thought, why not see if my Cav needs a bit of it. I looked underneath, basically everything towards the rear is a bit rusty, anti-roll bars, parts of the main chassis, the solid beam just behind the rear bumper, suspension mounts, etc. Now, i know that people use proper equipment to protect the underbody, but if i just use enough Waxoyl from the spraycans, would that be good enough to protect the underside from rusting? I'm willing to buy as much as possible, but i'm just after good advice in case i need to do anything else.
thanks. Andrei

Re: Hammerite Waxoyl
Just make sure the car is bone dry when you use it, or you'll just be sealing in the water. In the USA they just spray the undersides of the cars with used engine oil type stuff. So waxoyl should do the trick and add a couple of years onto the life of the car. The trick is, to put more on in a year or so.
Re: Hammerite Waxoyl
Yes just keep putting it on.
Re: Hammerite Waxoyl
I wouldnt bother covering rust with waxoil, get the rust off first, then cover it.

Re: Hammerite Waxoyl
My rear underside is actually worse than i thought. When i removed the bumper the other day, i looked under and where the bumper attaches to the rear nearside corner, and where there's supposed to be a metal pin that slots into the bumper, there wasn't. So i looked under that bit, and there was a rust hole through which i believe i can fit a £2 coin. I have no idea how i can repair that, but it needs to be sorted out. Rust is also present all the way along the rear crash beam(main beam running along the back end), and all around the rear tow-hook. Hammerite isnt going to sort that in my case. What can be suggested there?

Re: Hammerite Waxoyl
Really need pictures Andrei. If its just surface rust, then you need to get back to clean metal and paint with some kind of rust inhibitor paint (hammerite direct to rust or fence paint). for holes, again, pics needed.

Re: Hammerite Waxoyl
As requested, here's 3 pictures of the general problem.
That is the one and only yours truly Mr. Rust hole but its a biggun.
Thats probably the worst area along the crash beam. It's surface rust but its pretty much spread everywhere like chicken pox.
That's just the general surface rust on the outside of the shell. The pictures here are the worst ones overall, rest of it is just bubbling up surface rust.
So, underneath, the crash beam, and the corners of the bodywork are the worst. I'm thinking, i could wire brush or sand down the surface crap, then give it a couple of coats of waxoyl. What else would i need to use?
Cheers.

Re: Hammerite Waxoyl
That's too far gone to waxoil. Best you can do is get a wire brush on drill clean till its shiny then apply a good rust converter then use a rust encapsulater paint. This will only delay the rust. To properly fix you need to cut out and weld in new steel

As he said, that needs chopped out and replaced.
Still, it doesnt mean the cav is a gonna. But don't wait too long or you'll end up chasing it.

Re: Hammerite Waxoyl
Cheers on the replies, guys
I know, it is a bit of a biggie but i'm not giving up on her. What i'll do for now when i can is follow your advice and wire brush all the surface rust off, and apply a coat of protection on it, whatever that may be. What exactly am i looking for when i go to halfords next? Obviously a few cans of waxoyl, a new wire brush, what else?

Re: Hammerite Waxoyl
best rust killer is generite, its basically phosphoric acid which likes to eat rust so to speak. other convertors are tanic acid which bonds to the rust slowing spread. none are a perminant fix.
heres some on ebay that are pretty good, por15 and eastwood paints are the best but expensive.

hamerite no.1 rust beater is good but doesnt like top coats too much.
the isopan zinc is also good.
good prep is the key to a long lasting job, or come see me lol

Re: Hammerite Waxoyl
Thanks mate, i will keep an eye out for whatever i can get. I'll do what i can for now with the better parts but i'll have to let someone who can do it properly deal with it at some point. How far away are you then if you're offering to help?

Re: Hammerite Waxoyl
For the various chemicals that are mentioned, such as POR15 and Eastwood's, then a place in Rochdale does these via mail order called Frost Auto Restoration.
You could try these...I have had a few bits from them in the past.
http://www.frost.co.uk/
The site also shows some techniques, such as lead loading etc.
Hope this helps.
