After cleaning the cav I generally smear a small amount of vaseline along the inside edges of my rear arches (if you still got any)and in the 18 months i have had the car not a spot of rust has shown ( you should see how water repellant it is when the car's wet

vaseline is also very good on window/door and boot rubbers mine went a bit hard and looked like they were going to crack so my better half told me to use vaseline, worked a treat they are like brand new now

interesting idea would be the same as using waxolye maybe...i be giving the old vasline a go, could use it on door shuts and damp areas

My tool kit sounds a little dodgey..

I use Vaseline for protecting electrical connectors from moisture.

and I use baby oil to soften and remove tar and glue on vehicle panels..painted or otherwise. Metal and plastic.

I use vaseline on the inside door lock mechanism,no problems in the winter with frozen locks,done this to all my cars over the last 34 years,works a treat.

amazingly baby oil wont damage your paint or plastic like some plastic cleaners do!!

It also doesn't smell rancid like some oil based cleaners do!!

as the name suggests...it's good for your "baby"

I'm sure it would, and it would not leave any residue like some cleaners do.

However it is not listed anywhere else as a recommendation, and I don't want sueing over it if it all goes belly-up

I think it is less harmful on most plastics, than many silicone based fluids, which I have seen damage some soft plastic panels.
- A child's toy motor-bike screen springs to mind...my friend cleaned his son's screen with a silicone spray, and it scratched all the screen....he ended-up painting it to hide the damage!!.

ive been usein smooth peanut butter for years on all my cars on the plastic trims and bumpers it brings the shine back up nice coz of the oils in it but i will defo give the baby oil a try on my bumpers and trims now

I don't know why but vaseline made things worse for me when I tried it. Smeared it on the door rubbers and the boot rubber, and it kept sticking to the metal as I opened the doors/boot. And when it was really cold it still froze. And after a while the seals went hard and brittle. Thought it was supposed to do the opposite

It might be. I was going to say i've never had problems with it running but the the plastic bit on a cortina are very different to the cavalier, wing mirrors and bumper end caps mainly, there far enough from the bodywork to avoid ever getting runs in the rain

Vaseline appears to have 101 uses, I never think the same again the next time I pass a jar in the chemist or the supermarket!

WD-40 is silicone free.
