VBOA National Rally 2018 - Market Harborough 14th -15th July

Post by James McGrath »

The VBOA national rally will be at the Market Harborough show ground (address below) again this year on the Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th July.

Prices have been changed this year. It's now £15 for a day ticket (1 car up to 5 people) or £25 for a weekend ticket (Friday to Sunday).

There will be the usual trade stalls, live bands, a disco, the chariman's cup awards, an array for Food & Drink stalls and of course all the wonderful club stands.

Further details can be found here:

I have been bleating on for ages about attending on Saturday 14th July...

But it is likely that I may be going on the Sunday 15th instead.

I will not know until I can have a straight conversation with the missus.

I am sure she has made arrangements to go to Barnsley that day... :wall
thankfully it is just 1 or 2 junctions further north up the M1 than I would normally have used to join the M1 to go south to Market Harborough. (From Jn 35 to Jn 20).

I will keep James informed as to which day I will be attending.

I will be in general parking as I am not affiliated with any other Cavalier club.
(Only Vectra-C.com).

Regardless of which day it will be,
I look forward to seeing the other Cavaliers and club members on the day.

Only a week to go now!!

I'll be there with the Cavalier and Chevette club as usual in the LS.
Lizzie and my Dad will also be there in the V6 and CD auto respectively so more than half the family fleet will be there! :D

We'll be driving up on Friday night and staying in the town for two nights so I'll be around both days.

Okay -
Apparently we are coming on the Saturday.
As per my WIP thread, the Cav will not have any of it's planned modifications...

Hi All,

As you know, I visited on the Saturday.
Disappointingly signage to the event was non-existant, and we managed to get lost on the village / town centre one way signs, ending up in a supermarket car park.
Using my phone maps, we did get there eventually.

We didn't meet many Cavalier owners, but managed to see plenty of Cavs.
So in this post, I will show the Mk3 Cavs that I did see.

I did manage to meet up with James McGrath (with Lizzie and his dad) and Metallicav and his friend.
(Metallicav and his friend were the first and last people that we saw).
It was great to see you all and chat.

So here are some of the Cav Mk3s that I managed to spot.

Three of the cars from the McGrath Fleet.

And my little jalopy...
Overall my Cav got a lot of good feedback, despite my disappointment at not getting it finished in time.

Image

It was felt that one of the Cavs would do well during the judging on Sunday, as it was being recognised that the Cav Mk3 model is 30 years old this year.

more pictures of the other models there on Saturday to follow...

Good day I thought, although I parked in the 'general' car park!
Good auto jumble I thought with some good bargains to be had - I picked up a sealed in the bag/box Motaquip water pump for £2!
Wonderful selection of Vauxhall's, we, over the years have had a few examples, Viva HB's and HC's and Astra's and of course my MK3 which I have now owned for 22 years! Gulp.
I recognised James's selection but didn't see you anywhere! Shame, would have been good to put a face to a post!
A couple of photos.

I too was in general parking, but due to the wife being in a powered wheelchair, we were allowed to park immediately inside the entrance to the parking field.
To the right of the entrance in line with all the stalls.

Everyone would have had to pass my car to get onto the general parking.
Although we got there much later than I would have like.

The big green beastie (VXR8) was on the Vectra-C stand along will all the Insignias and about 8 or so Vectras and Signums.

I didn't see much of the cars to be honest as we settled On the Vectra-C stand for an hour, then hunted down James and Co on the Cavalier and Chevette stand, where we pestered him for nearly two hours (Sorry James).
Then we had a quick look around the rest of the stands before heading back to my car.
I got collared (in a pleasant way) by Metallicav who recognised the dark blue car with angel eyes. We drove to the other end of the stalls where we spent 90 minutes (on the ring road / track) talking to Metallicav and another Cavalier owning couple who liked the look of my angel eyes... the wife from the couple made a point of discussing the polar sea blue colour.

I did think about getting show plates with Robsey on, but chose not to in the end.
I am quite modest like that.

As for the stalls - there was very little for the Mk3 Cavalier... and not much more for the Vectra-C.
Nothing at all that caught my eye, although the wife saw some nice alloy wheels she fancied.

So I went with a good rake of cash in hand, but bought nothing but do-nuts and cold drinks...

I was a VBOA virgin yesterday.
I am a quiet observer type, so not very out going.
If I had been a lot more forward, I will have met and spoken to a lot more people that I know from the various forums. Alas, I only met about 4 or 5 people that I was familiar with.

There is always Billing Aquadrome - VauxFest in a few months...
Just 28 miles further south than Market Harborough.

A lot of nice pics there.
I liked the plane shots, I always find them difficult.

No wonder I struggled to find Vauxhall/opel at the Scottish car show, they were all down there
I wonder what t*t decided to hold it the same time as VBOA
" It's not rust. It's age-related patina " ;)

It is festival and car show season.
Only so many weekends to chose from, so you are bound to get a few events that clash on the same day.

Not as many Vauxhalls as I was expecting.
I bet there wasn't far off the same amount at the recent Cheshire Classic Car Show..
- Another one of my threads from June.

Glad you like the pictures. I tend to take many hundreds of photos, and then delete duplicates or fuzzy images.
Not bad for a basic Galaxy phone (S6).

I recall a few times PVS and VBOA were scheduled on the same weekends.

Die hard petrol heads attending the Performance Vauxhall Show, and the rest attending VBOA at Billing, as it was until a couple of years ago.

Well they are over a week late but here are my photos from Market Harborough... better late than never!

For the first time, I was able to take 3 cars to show off this year as Lizzie was crazy/amazing enough to want to drive one up herself. So it was Lizzie in the black V6, my dad in the silver CD auto and myself in the red LS:

Image

Image

We were immediately greeted by some great cars on the Cavalier and Chevette club stand including this 1992 SRi spec ex-police car. :cool

Image

Image

The show ground was much better laid out this year and it seemed very well organized.
All the clubs were laid out surrounding a central arena.

All the unusual clubs were there:

This year I was able to take part in 2 arena parades both of which all three of our Cavs took part.
A parade celebrating the 30th anniversary of the MK3 Cavalier
and of course the Cavalier and Chevette club parade.
There are some snaps of the former.

On the Saturday, I met the charming fellow Robsey and his wife and finally got the chance to get a look at his brilliantly restored LS:

Re-programing his trip computer:

Then there was a Spitfire flyover:

The following day we spent some time looking at some of the cars making their way round the arena.
Here are some of my favorites:

Kevin Briknall's immaculate redtop SRi (with a cameo from Lizzie):

This was probably one of my favorite cars there:

Just look at this olive green velour interior:

One of the more touching events at the show was a memorial parade for members of the VBOA who sadly passed away in the last year. Rather than a minuet silence, two cars from each club who had lost a member entered the parade area and sounded their horns for a full minuet.
The Cavalier and Chevette club had a MMK1 Cavalier and a Chevette for the dearly missed Brian Wilcox.
Here is Marilyn Scott from with her MK1 Cavalier:

Image

Then it was time for the chairman's cup.
Here are some of the brilliant entries:

I believe the red Calibra won the overall award.

Some final shots of our three on show:

Excellent photos James.
A real pleasure to meet yourself and the family.

Charming? Me?...
Obviously had you fooled. Ha ha.
Apologies if my wife talked your ears off.
She is very sociable that way.

As for the restoration - the brilliance is only lacquer deep.
There are a lot of faults that were never resolved.
However many thanks for your kind words.

I see a lot of your favourites are my favourites too.
The Monza, Senator and the other big battle cruisers.

I think I need to find myself a Tech 1...

Thanks Rob, it was a pleasure to meet you and have a proper chat this time too.
Not at all, your wife was very humorous to talk to. Lovely to meet her.

Yeah, the monza (royale), manta, senator, Carlton and Cavalier have always been my favourite Vauxhalls. It was a great turn out for them this year too.

Some lovely pics there. I see the standards of the cars are as good as I remember. Auto jumble can be a bit hit and miss. You just have to be lucky
