The later system can be read with tech1, the early system is notorious for being a pig to diagnose faults other than wheel speed sensor issues. The tests involve voltage and resistance checks, with which you go round in circles when the fault is intermittent. Check all rings are clean and have good square teeth, use a multimeter to test wheel speed sensors set on ac voltage and measuring across the two pins of the sensor will produce a good voltage that increases with wheel speed. Chances are these are fine if the system works ok initially. If you have changed the pump, along with the solenoid block and the fault is the same then you would be left with a supply/earth issue or a poor connection somewhere within the wiring looms.
