cavalier turbo build.

Post by Robert-in-Notts »

heres basicly how it arrived the lights etc wernt in, was a rolling shell.

Image

i then put on my grey front bumper to atleast make it look a little better

Image

Image

fitted wings mirrors, need spraying white, but will do for now.

Image

fitted the door cards off my gsi as im useing the gsi interior for a while.

Image

fitted some rear handles to the front doors, basicly i reckon it looks better, plus im going to be wireing in my own remote central locking alarm and immob while its all easy to get too.

Image

sorted abit of bubbling that was coming back through on the rear panel.
used hammerite krust

Image

Zinc 182 rust coat stuff.

Image

Image

then undersealed it.

some of the bits that i have been collecting up for it,

think cheepest thing i got for it yet is them calipers ebay bargain at 99p. ended up being £10.98p to my door :D
got matching rear spax shocks but they are buried somewhere  as are the 2 new rear arches and drivers side sill
Image

ended up with 2 sets of rods

Image

ecu for £15 from a car that was being broken up
Image

well the rear chassis rails were looking a bit suspect, an hence i was a little worried. But took all the rusty stuff down and it was only surface rust , gave it all a bit of a tap with a hammer and seam solid enough, thankfully

here it is after being treated with krust anti rust stuff

Image

Image

then coverd the whole leg in zinc 182 anti rust primer.

Image

drivers side sill end.

Image

passenger side is going the same way too

Image

been buying bits slowly.

Image

ended up selling the 17s, so now waiting on cav turbo wheels to be deliverd, then i can move it and put the new shed up move all the parts out the car and get started on welding it up.

thinking of running a f20 for a while, rather then the f28 an locked txb , reason for the f20 is i cant afford a fully working f28 at the moment, and i really want to get it up and running.

Thing to bear in mind, is the power rating of the gearbox.
The numbers after the F identify how much torque that the gearbox can handle.
F28 = 280 lb/ft, whereas the F20 will only handle 200 lb/ft

So if you do fit an F20, do consider that you will have to remember not to drive too enthusiastically, as you may rip the gearbox apart as it will be under-rated.

Other than that, looking forward to the continuation of the WIP. :thumb

Hmm. there was a big discussion about this on mig, from what people could gather it wasent true, i mean that would mean the f16 gearbox in my 1.7 td, an the 2.0 gli i had would both of been shagged some while ago, i mean plenty of people run f20's on lets, even the odd v6.

Though i do agree that it wont last long if booted constently but then no gearbox would eventually. an i also know the bloke with the 8vt astra on vauxextreme swears by f16/f18 gearboxes as hes had far more f20's spit there dummy out, where as f16's f18's have hung on in there.

But im going to be running standerd engine apart from xe cam, so it should last, an is only really going to be used as a stop gap and the engine will be running in from new rings big and main end bearings etc. but hay, who knows i mite get offerd a f28 at a decent price. well heres hoping anyway

the torque ratings on the gearboxes are there as guidelines really, they aren't saying the moment you hit that limit they will explode, they are there to give people an indication to what the gearbox could cope with for a long duration being driven everyday, iv known plent people who have run F20's on V6's/lets and they have held their own, some to this day are still going, so aslong as you dont drive it within an inch of its life everyday it will be ok, going that its a healthy box to start with :thumb
