1.8 GLS Hatch Project

Post by SeanGSi »

1.8i Hatch Project

Hey, i thought i would start a project thread on here. I seen the cav advertised locally for scrap and went to have a look. It came with no wheels, fuel pump out of the tank and no fuel. I connected up the battery and fuel pump, added fuel and it started. I handed over £100 and it was mine. :)

Very happy with it, 1995 on a 'N', 1.8i GLS, 102k Miles with full service history. All old mot and tax discs. It has previously been undersealed and has had new brake pipes 3 years ago.

So the project starts, i decided to get it ready for mot first before much else starts. So far bought new rear wiper, a few bulbs, a tin of seam sealer and underseal, stonechip and a few other small things. Found 3 small holes so far which have been welded. Going to do a small service on the car next ( oil, filters spark plugs etc ).

Also bought some nice bits. 17 Alloys (need a refurb and a tyre), 60mm Rear Corsa Apex Springs and Calibra 40mm Front Springs, GMax Shocks Front and Rear, Calibra Leather heated seats in Black, Sony Bluetooth Headunit and some 6x9s to fill the holes in parcel shelf.

Pics of when i got it back and then cleaned and debadged:

Just home:

Cleaned etc:

It had a 13" steel on while i got a new 17 fitted.

Got a few things done today, tinted one side, fitted new rear shocks, which needed modifying as they were from a calibra, undersealed and stone chipped the front arches. I also fitted the new front shocks and springs at the same time. Ran out of time and only got 1 of the front seats fitted.

Will get better pics when i get it out of the garage, a few things left to do and then its going for mot.

Got a few things done today, got the new handbrake fitted and adjusted, took a while as never did one before. I then set about something more exciting. Modified the whole calibra leather to fit mines. Previously i had made the calibra leather fit a corsa b so wasnt on calibra frames etc.

Drivers seat in from other day:

I then decided to do something with the front end, had a few led strips left and some black. Heres pics so far, will put up completed ones tommorrow.

Headlight smoked and daylights fitted:

Also got a few other little bits done including painting the parcel shelf gloss black to match in with black leather.

A very tidy turnaround I say, definitely looks nice now. £100 is a bargain for it, can't believe it was advertised as scrap unless there were hidden major problems.

Looking good then buddy. :thumb

Updates are alot slower than i would like as car is stored at father in laws so cant work on it much but heres todays progress. Stonechipped both sills in grey and then painted with some old silver i had lying which isnt quite the right colour lol but closer than grey. Painted a few more bits in the bay :thumb . Also refurbed another wheel and painted 1 caliper. Then got bored and decided to fit the new tweeters as old were distorting. Next up was towbar which took a while as had never fitted one before.

Sill all painted up:

Not had a update for a while but not had a chance to do any work but had a few things saved up to do. First i put the gauges in but need to get a oil sensor or something to get it to work? If anyone knows please tell me ;)

Image

Next i had ordered a gsi bumper but its arrived and the paintwork hadnt been done right so some of its cracked, doesnt bother me though as getting resprayed anyway, got the modified crash bar in that came with it and got it fitted

Bumper off:

Next i had picked up a rear splitter and wanted it see if it would fit, needs alot of work to get it finished but its on for now.

Also picked up side skirts but they are still sitting inside it, next i got some more blue hose in so got it fitted:

Had a bit of a f*** up today, bought 1k plastic adhesion promoter primer and it was clear lol. It had a grey lid so i just presumed it was grey

I then ended up having to paint it gloss black as it was all i had.

Next i did the dreaded towbar wiring. I was not looking forward to this as ive never even looked at tow bar wiring before. I found the plug and then proceeded to figure out the wiring. Ive put it up here for everyone else but probably no one will want it lol.

Towbar > Plug

Yellow > black/white
blue > black/blue
white > brown
green > black/green
brown > grey/red
red > black/yellow
black > grey/black

Just in and its pitch black so no pics.

Well got fed up of travelling to work on the cav everytime and decided to throw it in for a mot to see what it needed. Failed on 2 droplinks and a wishbone bush so well chuffed. Pic of on the way there:

Image

Parts are ordered for today so should get it passed. Then still got loads to do but at least its on my doorstep then.

Is the paint on the exhaust heatshield high temperature paint? If not it is likely to melt or worse, catch fire. I liked the start of this, allowing for the fact that I'm not a fan of the blue bits, but the rear bumper really spoils it in my opinion, it doesn't suit the car at all.
"No the temperature gauge doesn't work........
we've driven 150 miles today........
the heater went cold last Thursday........
they check the level when it's serviced don't they?"

i think the bumper will look better when its finished tbh, and yes its high temp paint bud

Well got it mot'd and tax'd. :)

So finally got it parked outside my house. Haven't really done much work yet apart from upgrading rear speakers as have been too busy. Took it out for its first long run and it blew a water hose off in the middle of town as it didnt have a jubilee clip. Very embarrassing lol as smoke was coming out the bonnet. Apart from that minor f*** up its been spot on. Bought some jubilee clips and a new front wiper set for 5.09 from halfords. Heres some pics from when i stopped:

And now:

And some cam effects lol:

Will hopefully get some stuff done tommorrow.

1.8 GLS Hatch Project 13/09/12 Speaker pods started

Post by SeanGSi »

Got a few updates. First some pics of front of car with the splitter off:

Image

Image

Next ive been wanting my vibe components in for weeks. Finally started working on them. Got the pods for them all fibreglassed up and started to fill then decided i wanted some more lol and ended up fibreglassing a second pod in. Each pod is fibreglassed seperate so they dont cancel each other out. Also dont know if this annoys anyone else but you cant get a tin in the door pocket so sorted that aswell :) Obviously needs alot of work to be finished.

Pics:

Image

Image

Image

Next up will probably annoy most of you but i love it lol.

Image

Image

Impreza high level spoiler modified to fit the boot lid exactly. Got it all fibreglassed and filled at the edge. I know ill probably be the only one who likes it lol.

Er?
Somebody else already started a FAIL thread, post this last pic in it.... It'll fit right in. Seriously, your car, your choice. Just not my thing, or probably half the other members.
