Well that clean up sorted that problem out now she starts brilliantly with limited fuss, next thing on my list is to clean and over haul the carb as i have a feeling, like mentioned sticky choke so hopefully this weekend if she's not needed I will get that off and strip it down.

I'm holding out of the wheels for now as i really need new leads and plugs.

And want to get those brakes sorted.

When you check out the choke, take the choke mass off the side of the carb (dome shaped, mounts on three Philips screws) and look inside. There is a bimetallic spring, and a small heating element that sits in a ceramic insulated mount. If any of the bits are loose and not securely attached to the housing then you can suffer random choke operation.
..... Oh yes, and mark it so you get it back in the same place, or note which marks line up on the mounting.
"No the temperature gauge doesn't work........
we've driven 150 miles today........
the heater went cold last Thursday........
they check the level when it's serviced don't they?"

Cheers m8 some good advice there, yeah what it is every now and then when driving the engine coughs for a millisecond like its cut out for the millisecond but then its completely fine but its only when I'm in a high gear like 3 or 4 its happened once in 2nd.
So I'm hoping to get the carb off flush it through with cleaners and clean up with thinners and run a steamer over it hopefully that will sort it, as I've looked in the haynes and apparently a overhaul should sort it fingers crossed.
Plus tomoz I'm ordering my Bosch super 4s plugs and leads plus a new fuel filter and some other bits its about time I started looking after her.

Check the plug that goes to the distributor, they have a habit of corroding and cause the symptoms you describe.

More specifically, the lucas dizzy you have on there has a nasty habit of the pins going green and loose making a poor contact where they move around. Don't just look at the wiring side, look at the dizzy side too.

Will do been so busy today with everything that's going on this week I wanted to get on with it but life in general is getting in the way.
Hopefully if we don't get any snow I'm going to get on with doing some bits.

Money wise I'm Skint now so i can't get any bits that I wanted so next time hopefully.

Got out today changed the leads to another set I found that came off an old 1600 I had and they weren't that old, gave the plugs a good clean up, all points on dizzy cause were clean including the coil point, clean all connections to the coil,wd40 on all the leads and ends, copper grease most of the bits that needed greasing like throttle and such, gave carburettor a look over and discovered that the secondary throttle valve vacuum diaphragm had no breather on it at all so i got a clear tube for now and another small breather had perished so that got replaced too.
uploadfromtaptalk1358853668553.jpg
Took her out for a spin and she's now running much better still coughed once but i put this down to the carb needing a clean as its pretty gunky all over.
So next on my list clean carburettor and then clean that lump up.
Waiting for snow to clear for that though.

The wiring plug to the dizzy was clean too? The one that goes to the body of the dizzy rather than the cap? Check it I'd you haven't already.

Cool, as long as you have covered it. Bit of grease to stop moisture getting in might be a good idea. I've lost count of how many I've seen where the pins are loose in the distributor side and move inwards when you plug the wiring into it.

Would copper grease do or is that too bad being copper that is a conductor.

as long as you don't overdo it, just a light coating on the pins

Done another wheel today its not too bad it reacted a tiny bit but i managed to sort that out.

I also found some new roll bar end runners in my garage that i brought and used for about 1000 miles on my old cavalier, and the clamps I cleaned them up then painted them, not the rubbers of coarse.

I'm getting bits off and cleaning them up and painting them slowly, just to clean bits up and get rid of the aged rusty bit, I've got lots of brackets and clamps in off other cavs I've broke.

Next thing is a clean and paint my strut tops I've got kicking about.
