I suppose it would be a surprise to others but the V6 has been on my list for a while, this starting problem has just cemented it's fate. The 1.6 was for bought for the Father-in-law and he has barely used it and now has admitted he won't drive again. But never fear, 'Archer' the 2L remains as my daily driver so the stupid posts will continue until people get bored of them!

EML light has come on and the paperclip test reveals 33 - Map Sensor (Voltage High).
Can anyone direct me to what part I'm looking for in the engine bay please?!!

Go to the back wall of the engine bay.
Approx 2/3 to 3/4 of the way from the left side towards the right (as looking towards the rear of the car from the front).

You have that thin plastic cover thingy that covers the scuttle area.
Just lift the lower lip of that, and you should see a rectangular box with a vacuum pipe and electrical plug on it.
It hides under there never to be seen until it fails...

That is your map sensor.
Usually it is a perished vacuum pipe (if you are lucky).
Otherwise it is a replacement sensor.

They are also commonly used on Renaults and other cars, so don't be surprised what manufacturer ebay sellers sell them under.

It will look like "something" this -

I've accumulated 3 over the years, could never tell whether they actually worked or what they did, tried them on both my old 8 valvers, all 3 have different part numbers on them, if you fancy trying another sensor, let me know, but check your vacuum hoses as Robsey said, particularly at the throttle body.

Thanks Robsey and Andrei - I shall go an investigate! I secretly think the car heard it was going to be sold and decided it would cause me trouble!

10 hours later, it works again! Shut window and not opening it again! Despite have hundreds of views on eBay, no-one bought it, so back on for another 7 days. if no-one buys it then it'll get sorned as our tax is due and I can't afford to keep it taxed, not when I have 2 others!

Window sorted and car has been on ebay twice now. Over 1400 views and 50 watchers but no bidders for a measily £300. Tax now run out so I'll SORN it today.

Seems the prices for everyday Cavaliers has dropped since the scrap price is so low. People want them for nothing as if £300 is not low enough

That's because this society is full of bargain hunters who don't appreciate good products when they see them.

I hate ebay for the moronic ar5eh0les who message me in crap text speak saying they will 'giv u £100 for it'. No, but I'll rip your ****** out and shove it up your **** you illiterate ****.

It is fair to say that my tolerance for things has reached an all time low. Low seems to sum up people nowadays; low intellect, low ambitions, low educate, low abilities, low attention span, low morals and low standards.

Well said Dave, I couldn't agree more.. Get it all out mate, I share your opinion of this world, and I used to hold the crown of letting my drunken mind go on a rage at absolutely anything, as I'm sure most of you guys remember...

I totally agree - I will buy from ebay, but I will not sell on ebay - I just can't stomach the idea of someone trying to take the p!$$ by saying that they have not received it or it was broken etc...
Just so that they don't have to pay you for a perfectly good item.

Too much scum out there.

Sadly a lot of people in this world lack a decent education or morals.
