Steven715's MK3 Cavalier CDX

Post by Steven715 »

Hello there to you all, I am new around here but I have been in the background reading most of the posts that people have put together all very interesting stuff.
So a little about me my name is Steven you can call me Steve and I come from Bedfordshire I have owned a Mk2 Cavalier since April 2015 this is one car that I have wanted for a very long time even before I started driving this was due to my Mum and Dad owning one and and that was in the family for a number of years until they sold it due to Rust! fast forward a couple of decades and I now own one that I run as a Classic car for summer use only i'm sure you all know why :thumb
A year later I started to get into the MK 3 Cavalier unlike the MK 2 there was no real family connection my dad did own one but that was after my mum and dad split however there was always someone that had a MK 3 when I first started working.
This time I wanted a top of the range model preferably one with Air conditioning I looked for a long time until a good one came up. And no I didn't pay £900 for it :P
Image
I had looked at 3 and this one was easily the best one. So time for some pictures I think.

Welcome to the forum.
Nice looking car.
Appears to be in very good condition.

Not sure why, but that number plate looks familiar.
Maybe once belonged to previous forum member.

To be honest, the mk2 is my favourite car, and the engines are just awesome.
I had a 1987 1.3 base for about 10 years - blimey it went like stink.

Hi Robsey thank you for the warm welcome yes the car is in good condition generally and untouched as far as originality, just slightly worn out in places and silly little faults that I can get my teeth into when the warmer weather finally gets here.
Number plate I wonder if you're thinking of N162 CRO? I know they are on the Cavalier and Chevette owners club.

My 1986 1.6 L goes very well better than I thought when I first got it, I do have to say my MK 2 is my favourite as its back to basics even with a manual choke, what I really like is how much feedback you get from the road compared to a new car! especially in the rain I think this is why so many people drive like nutters because they have no feedback like the old cars.

I am not going to hog your thread much further about the mk2.

(Although you are more than welcome to open another thread in the other car section if you like).

Just to say - I assume yours is a Varajet carb.
I had the 1.3 with 2e3 carb.
Manual steering and windows - only glimpse of powered was the later electronic ignition.

Sadly I think poor driving is down to attitude.
Drivers simply don't give a monkey any more.

Anyway - back to the mk3.
It usually is just little niggles and general wear and tear.
To repeat a comment I posted a couple of nights ago - as long as the car is moderately rust free, then you will never want to get rid of it.

Hi Steven

Looks like a very nice example and on a N plate too, good catch! I always say to any cavy owner, if it's not already been done, is to make sure you clean the muck out from under the rear arch lips and up where the tank filler is, as well as the muck dirt and stones from the front crossmember box section - just behind front wing. It sits in there and blocks the little drain hole. It looks like polar sea blue, same as my 1.8 and I think Robsey's the same colour too.

What's your plans for it, keep it original and just enjoy the drive or something more radical?

As there is interest in my MK 2 then I will be gladly open a new thread and yes it is the Varajet 2 carb.

There are plenty of niggles that needs sorting I have done a couple already I just need to wright them up and put up the pictures etc.
One that really annoys me is the passenger door seems to have drooped and looking closely at it looks like the top hinge is loose (Weld breaking away???) I have tried jacking the door up to no avail. Its already proved its-self as being a good strong engine and gearbox my Nan and Grandad's Ford Focus broke down I used the cavalier to tow it back home very short distance and a maximum speed of 20-25 mph in sports mode to take the strain off the gearbox and engine, i was very happy with its capability.
I'm very happy with the car even with the sort time I have had her and when the weather warms up again I will start by doing a service and cam-belt / water pump change.

Hi Andy,
I have already washed out half a gardens worth of dirt from the wheel arches the crossmember section I didnt know about so this will get done also thank you for the tips. My plan is to get some Dynax X50 on there I have never used this stuff but its worth trying to protect it I feel.
I like the colour it seems to hide all the dents well :thumb
My plans are to keep it original I have never been one for modifications and things these are really starting to get rare now so it will be unique enough I think and as you say N registered and its a CDX.
I want to eventually sort out all the dents get the air con working again and sort out the badly scratched alloy wheel, all in good time as and when money and time allows. Thanks for your words of wisdom re the dirt this will be something that I will get on with in the mean time.

Welcome to the forum! :wave

Looks in great condition. Good spec too.

Dynax s50 is terrific stuff, I use it myself along with their Hydrate 80 rust converter.

My family had a 1984 1.3 MK2 L hatch in polar white when I was growing up.
I'll never forget it, it's the car that got me interested in cars as a child.

Thank you James,
I first see Dynax though a search and sounds easy to use ,I have read all of you WIP threads and see that you use it with good results, I do have to say your very good at writing your threads and I love how you go through all the details.

I see the picture of your MK2 and I totally understand where your coming from I always helped my Dad out with services and repairs on his MK2 it was a 1984 China Blue 1.6 saloon (A982 PBM) I really didn't want my parents to sell that car but looking back I totally understand why they had to due to rust. I always remember that car!
So thanks to the MK2 here I am with a MK3 as well :thumb

Please can someone post a picture of where the rear window wiper spindle comes out of the boot lid I think mine is missing a rubber boot as it looks like water can get in.

Thanks.

My Cav hatch had the same issue.
No rubber boot as such, but there are a few washers and angle pieces.

Give me a few minutes, and I will photograph the whole wiper assembly removed from the hatch.

I ended up buying a whole wiper from ebay, just for all the rubber spacers etc.

Image

There is-
an inner angled bush. (Inside hatch skin).

an outer angled bush (outside hatch skin).

A big hex nut to squeeze the bushes around the skin, and to keep out water.

and a plastic dome cap over the lot.
