BRITISH TV SHOW SEEKS MK 3 CAVALIER TURBO 4X4

Post by searlerc »

Hello Mk 3 Owners,

Hope you're well. I work for a well-known car show that airs on National Geographic. We restore cars at a level of upmost secrecy before revealing the restored car to the owner as a surprise. We are now in need of help from your owners club...

We are restoring a Mk 3 Cavalier Turbo 4x4. We are therefore seeking TWO cars for our show:

1) The FIRST car is a 'pristine' version of a Mk 3 Cavalier Turbo 4x4. Ideally we're looking for an OEM car, one that looks like it has just rolled out of the showroom in 1992/3. Our presenters will use this car to celebrate what made it such a great car at the time of its release and today. We'll fully insure the car for the filming day, and pay for fuel + food for the time/cost involved.

2) The SECOND car is a slightly harder ask.... to ensure our owner doesn't realise their car has been taken for restoration, we're looking for a placeholder car, that we can swap the car out with. It doesn't have to be a runner therefore, but if anyone know of or has a purple/maroon Mk3 Cavalier Turbo 4x4 that we can borrow for 6-8 weeks we're all ears. We can take care of the return transport trip. This car will be used as a switcheroo, so we may change the wheels over to match the owner's car, but that's it.

Please e-mail me at rob.searle@renegadepicturesic.co.uk for more information and I'll be sure to get back to you. Appreciate you all keeping this conversation to THIS FORUM ONLY as well. We promise to do the best job possible with the Mk 3 CT 4x4; we can't make the show without your help. Here's hoping!

Thanks,

Rob

For those reading this, I have been in dialogue with Rob, over the past week or so. And keeping my admin colleagues in the loop via the backroom section.

His details are openly available online, with the most basic google search.

Sounds like interesting times ahead. Just as the cold weather tempers everyone's enthusiasm.

I would offer my car as a Switcheroo, seeing as it is sorned and in need of TLC...
- but being dark blue and only an LSi it would be plainly obvious if my car was used as the decoy.

I'd have thought they would have offered money for these kind of things, I'm sure Tim and Fuzz dont do it for nothing purely because they are enthuiasts. It's not like they wont have a budget for the show.

Hi David,

It's a valid point, and you're not the first to point to the fact we are a commercial operation... However to date, in over 10 series, we haven't paid a fee to the 'pristine' car owner, usually because of why the car is being restored, we are so grateful for people's generosity. We will of course pay for fuel, accommodation, and meals on the day. For the pristine filming day, it promises to be a great filming experience - meeting Tim & Fuzz, getting your car shown around the world as the poster boy for the Mk 3 Cavalier Turbo 4x4. Furthermore, the story behind this car is truly heart-warming. I can't give details away here - but I'd hope any owner that hears of the owner's plight would be encouraged to provide their car for the day.

Appreciate any help anyone can give, rob.searle@renegadepicturesic.co.uk

Mine lacks a few doors, sorry.

When you say purple/maroon, do you mean northcape? didn't think they made the cav turbo in that colour.

I think it will be this colour.
One of the more common turbo colours.

Indeed, I only ever saw purple Cavaliers in the fleet of the Manchester Ambulance Service - they were all TD's.

But hey ho.

I had a quick search if there were any northcape cavaliers. Looks like the first hit was wikipedia, and that image there looks to be northcape: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vauxhall_Cavalier

So - getting back on track...

Anyone able to help?
Either with a good car or a "rent a wreck"?

Hello VC Owners,

Due to the immense help of Robsey, I was put in touch with Dan Furr who passed me on to an owner who has agreed to lend their car to us for the day of filming.

Episode due in Spring 2022!

Thanks all, case closed.

I presume you found a decoy then?

Okay looking forward to seeing this on the box in the spring :thumb
That is fast... took about two years to fix mine - but then it was a total rust bucket

I used to watch this show but with Tim's section I found it just to much so stopped, would like to see something on the Cavaliers though. Guess I'll have to record it so I can skip through the nonsense.

Yep Tim plays a very "trying" role.
His antics could easily make true car enthusiasts quite exasperated.

It is a format that many "for enjoyment" motoring shows employed over the years.

It is a similar relationship between Fuzz and Tim, that you got with Edd China and Mike Brewer.

I found Mike quite annoying with his often juvenile antics.

Maybe that is because I am "old" and don't tolerate juvenile stupidity readily.

To me he ruins what otherwise could be an excellent show. Look on any forum that disscuses the show and everyone says the same thing. Get rid of Tim and increase the restoration content.
I also agree totally with you about Mike. Used to like the show with Edd but the latest ones are virtually unwatchable.
Made the mistake of watching the Wheeler dealers episode with the yellow Golf. Did anyone else notice how they hid the rear quarter after repair from the camera? I'm guessing the paint match was awful?

I suppose the extreme of this is Top Gear / The Grand Tour.
Absolutely minimal useful content - pure slap-stick.
I cannot bear to watch it... sheer baffoonery - the three stooges done badly.

I suppose "The Fifth Gear" and the original Top Gear were simply not entertaining enough.
It all comes down to the audience figures.
Most people with a practical mind do not waste hours in front of the goggle-tube.
Unless they are looking for a bit of nostalgia or light relief.
They are usually out getting their hands dirty, or watching useful How 2 videos on youtube.

I think the most "realistic" car show is "a car is born" and other hands on programs with Mark Evans.
Yes he can be a bit daft and quirky, but at least he is being constructive - warts and all.

I like the edd parts of wheeler dealers, but his own shows on youtube seem to lack something without mike.

Never quite took to the american stuff they do now, maybe 10% of the whole show is interesting.

Latest message from Rob Searle.

The pristine record in on the 2nd February; we're filming it on the Horseshoe pass. Episode should broadcast this Spring on Nat Geo and then on More4 about 9 months later.
Ta for now,

I have just seen a news article to say that the car is now complete.

Hence why the topic can now reappear.
I had been asked by Rob Searle from Car SOS to delete or hide the topic to avoid the planned refurb and reveal from being leaked to the owner.

It got it's 12 months tax and ticket at the end of March.
Not sure if it is episode 9 or 10 from the series. (Series 10).
It would be amazing ifit was episode 10 as that would make it the 100th episode overall.
Although I assume not, as it sounds like No 10 (100) will be a conversion to electric.

The "lucky" owner is a chap called Darren.
Not so lucky, is that he is confined to a wheelchair.
Even though mobility is my field of expertise, I cannot see how he could ever get into the car - even as a passenger.

https://www.news24.com/wheels/wildonwhe ... 20220417-2

In his situation, the torment would be too much for me.

I was right about the colour - it is maroon, not purple. :)
And,
You can tell that it is north of London because Tim has to wear two padded jackets to keep warm - lol

I presume either next week or the week after.
Depends what channel you are watching, because they are showing full evenings of episodes on National Geographic.

Mon 2nd is-
Ep 1 Fiat Uno Turbo 5pm
Ep 2 VW Corrado 6pm
Ep 4 Escort mk2 RS2000 7pm

All I know is that Episode 10 will be an electric conversion, so I am guessing that the cav will be Episode 9.

The way the maths work implies either Thurs 5th May, or Thurs May 12... not listed yet.

Am I drunk, or does this Cav have no B pillar? And rolls royce style doors maybe?

Look closely, it really doesn't seem normal.

I had not looked before, but now that you mention it,
You are quite correct.
It will definitely be a "one-off".
A Vauxhall Cavalier with barn doors.
