Re: 93 Cav LS - Run about
Replaced the ISM today, initial turn of the key and I thought "bugger, it's not worked.. as it ran barely at 350-400rpm and was hunting badly with the EML light on, gave it a little blip and it soon sorted itself out and idles at around 600-650rpm now.
Re: 93 Cav LS - Run about
Excellent news...
Just see if it sorts your possible pressurisation issues now eh
well done, I am always a little wary dealing with sensors etc and glorified actuator devices, especially if there is a chance that I could easily bugger things up.
I presume you cleaned the valve first to remove the oil contamination from the Corsa.
I expect carb cleaner would do this.

Re: 93 Cav LS - Run about
Nope, just removed and stuck it in the hole. But I plugged the old one in and started the cav up and its just a little rod that moves back and forth to feather the throttle. tis weird how it works.Robsey wrote:Excellent news...

Re: 93 Cav LS - Run about
It's like a glorified needle valve, as used on the air-bypass mechanism on carbs.
The pin should be tapered, narrow at the tip, and wider at the root.

Re: 93 Cav LS - Run about
I want another 18SV engine'd cav at some point, really miss my old one. Had the opportunity to buy it back last year, but he wanted more for the engine than I sold the whole car to him for, kinda drew a line through that option.
Anyhooo, I think once the exhaust is tidied up, decatted and airtight, things will be much more on the side of improoved than "argh, fudge.."

Great to see that you are more positive about the future outlook.

Aye, distance is a bit of a bind. Think I have 2 of the last cav's in Hebburn now actually.Robsey wrote:Great to see that you are more positive about the future outlook.

Re: 93 Cav LS - Run about
Well, Cav started cutting out on me after idling in traffic, did it once too often (middle of a busy roundabout) so it good the ICV whipped off again and a can of carb cleaner laced into it.
Seems to have (touch wood) so far resolved the issue.
Box and engine oil should be dropped this weekend too.

Re: 93 Cav LS - Run about
I assume, as you are a Veteran of the Cav scene, that you have cleaned all the breather pipes etc, to reduce the amount of oil vapour being pushed into the throttle body, and so clogging up the ICV.
I cleaned my breather pipes inclding the gauze filter about three months ago, and noticed that when I cleaned my ICV last month that it too was drenched in oil.
The C18NZ are dirty beggers....never had this much filth on my Mk 2 Cavalier 1300 with a Pierburg 2E3 Carb on it
I take it you did get off the roundabout first, before pulling bits off you throttle body

Yeah, pushed it into the layby. Must have looked a right sight too.Robsey wrote:I assume, as you are a Veteran of the Cav scene, that you have cleaned all the breather pipes etc, to reduce the amount of oil vapour being pushed into the throttle body, and so clogging up the ICV.

Didn't have much in the way of rags / cleaning kit too do it, so it got a quick once over (was on my way to work).
Might have a look at it over the weekend. Have some other bits and peices to sort while I'm at it.
Thinking about re-routing the breathers into a catch tank and see what difference it makes.
Re: 93 Cav LS - Run about
I was thinking when typing the previous post, that you could use a catch tank with filter material before the outlet hose, or a glorified "U" bend to catch the excess oil.
I had a Maestro 1300 (A+ Engine - please don't laugh) before my Cavaliers, it was a well designed car, with a vapour separator built half way up the steel breather pipe between the engine block and the cam housing.
similar sort of place to the steel breather pipe at the front of the C18NZ engine.
That engine was absolutely spotless. I never had to change any gaskets and never had any issues with oil vapour.
Now the 1600 engines were different, but they smoked when they needed cleaning.

Re: 93 Cav LS - Run about
I also have a slow leak on my rear crank seal (behind the fly-wheel of all places).
I will get round to it eventually.
The engine and box are being transferred anyway aren't they Gary.
If it is the rear one, then you will probably be stripping the box off anyway, and the only extra bit is the clutch / flex-plate and the fly-wheel.
Once these are off, then the bearing is there for you.
The front one is slightly different, as it is a cambelt off job, and then remove the crank sprocket...don't lose the woodruff key !!
Basically, you screw a self tapper into the old seal, and pull it out with a pair of pincers / pliers or grips.
Then press the new seal in - lubricate the skirt of the bearing, and push it home flate with a socket of an appropriate size.
Then rebuild in reverse order.
Think that is it in a nut-shell,
The rear one is obviously more difficult, due to the bulk of the gearbox / autobox.

Re: 93 Cav LS - Run about
I suspect the rear (box side) is leaking, however I got bored waiting for someone to turn up tonight so jacked the Cav up at Scotch corner and give it a look over. If I'm lucky. It's just going to be the sump gasket thats gone. I can live with that as it's not a huge job to do.
Re: 93 Cav LS - Run about
Only know for sure, when you wipe the sump flange, and see if the dribble is from that, or the bottom of the bell housing..
Mine is definately black oil from the bottom of the bell housing. - Defo rear crank seal

Re: 93 Cav LS - Run about
Its running from the sump and down the back of the inspection plate (I hope) will see how bad it is in the morning.

Re: 93 Cav LS - Run about
When the oil seal behind my flywheel was leaking. I first thought it was the sump. When I took off the cover off the gear box that lets you see the rear of the fly wheel, you could see oil streaks coming from the center of the fly wheel to the outer edge. So I would check the rear of your flywheel to see if yours has oil on it.

Aye, I know what you mean Greig. I know the sump is leaking too so it'll need doing.
I was hoping the end crank seal wasn't gone as to be honest it's looking like an engine and box out job to get to it (autobox is touching the chassis leg just about - so no space by the looks of it)

Yup, pulling the box out isn't my idea of fun, if it comes out, the manual box will most likely be going back in..ilovemyelite wrote:what a painEnvoy CDX wrote:autobox is touching the chassis leg just about - so no space by the looks of it
Not the worst thing in the world, just can't afford to be without the car for too long is all
Re: 93 Cav LS - Run about
Bit of a pain, changing the pedal box, and setting up the clutch cable etc.
And despite the size, them gearboxes can be damn heavy and awkward to manipulate into place.
But still a lot easier than a 16V punto...I speak from experience on that one
