V6power's Cavalier 2.5 WIP

Post by V6power »

Well i have had the cavalier a while now and though it was about time that I started a WIP, I couldn't find a cleaner cavalier if I tried, bought from an old chap who has had it as far back as I can trace. when I went to see it I about fainted when I seen the condition of it, underneath looks like its never seen the road, the mileage is high 150k yet the car didn't reflect this, I am sure it has an interesting story to tell but ill never know.

Anyway this brings me to my first post, the car was completely standard when purchased, the god awful moon buggy ride height still remains although I do have a suspension kit ready to go on, but as the cavalier is off the road just now for the winter I am not that fussed on it. right, ill take it from the start to how it looks now, onto the pictures:

First thing for me was to get rid of the black panel on the back and those naff orange tail lights, quick raid of the cavalier parts shed and I found some late type SRi lights and a colour coded panel, along with a GSi front bumper.

Image
Image

Then off with the black panel, was amazed at how clean it was behind it.

Picture of the new lights fitted.

Next was the GSi front bumper, no problems really, the original bumper came off fairly easy.

Image
Image

The interior was clean although the gear and handbrake gaitors were very worn so I ordered some new ones, forgot to take a picture of them fitted though, looks alot better.

Image
Image

I have a bit of a picture blank from here onwards, just simply forgot to take any pictures, I got together the rest of the GSi/Turbo kit, rear bumper, bump strips, side skirts and the rear lip spoiler, Turbo alloys, I do have the end caps but they were in bad nick so I repainted them, just never got round to fitting them yet.

As the cavalier is off the road and with having no time to work on it, its been sat there for a few months without anything happening to it, since owning the car its never had a heater, so I decided to crack on with changing the thermostat, anyone who doesnt know the V6, the thermostat happens to be right in the middle of the V's, so that means a fair bit need to come off, prior to doing this I dropped a washing tablet in the coolant and ran it through the system for a few days before flushing it out, I flushed everything out, radiator, matrix etc until it was only clear water coming out. then I began on the strip down.

Image

the manifolds, lower dividers, throttle body etc. were all cleaned, primed and painted with red engine enamel, I forgot to take pictures but I have a few of me building it back up, engine was surprisingly clean, all breather pipes were clear which is unusual on the V6, especially with the miles it has done. anyway back to the pictures:

and this brings me to present, coolant was bled through the system this morning and I was very happy to have a nice roasty toasty heater, while the car was running I gave it a good polish, the panels were too cold for a wax coating, I decided that I am neither going for a turbo look or a GSi look and the white/black was rather plain, so I opted for the red SRi stripe to give it some colour, the vectra colour coded handles get rid of the naff factory black handles, I have since just purchased a set of white vectra supertouring alloys so the mega clean turbo alloys will be going, unsure whether to sell or keep them as spares, time will tell, i also have some turbo rear cluster and panel, the panel requires painting, if i remember I will take pictures of this. apart from that, it will be tucked away til summer, where the bilsteins will be going on, finally getting it lowered. Oh and one last thing, I changed the side repeaters for nice clear ones and also was very lucky to get a new number plate light for the back, getting rid of the yellow thing that it had.

pictures as it stands now:

Plans for the future, store till summer, get the bilsteins fitted, opted for some cheeky B12 shockers with eibachs, get a stainless system made for it, stainless manifolds, 3l cams and then enjpy :D

Thanks mate, yeah the suspension is actual moonbuggy height, I wanted to get a decent set up first though rather than putting any old kit on it.

yeah mines is a V6 same as yours Alan, no gls or what not.

to be honest I like the red stripe, gives it a bit of colour, think it goes well with the white, will look better once its lowered, getting the front arms polybushed so just going to get it all done at the same time.

yea I was thinking the same. you sourced a well priced set? I still have your springs - didnt go with them as the turbo ones seemed a bit more resistant under load so kept them on. ...so if you need them....

It will look awsome lowered. Any chance you can give me a step by step on the door handles and rear panel?? I have the paint but no idea how to paint the stuff without screwing it up!!

aye german ebay is the way to go, can get bilstein B12 kit for alot cheaper than the UK. 60mm is a bit too low for me, especially with the road up to the house.

the handles I didn't paint, managed to get a set of a white vectra, the back panel is simple enough though.

sand the panel down, get some paint cleaner wipes and go over the area, once its dry give it 4-5 light coats of plastic primer, grey will be fine for your colour, once thats dry, give it a light sand with some wet and dry 800, take out any inperfections, then go for around 5-6 coats of the base colour, again once its dry give it a light sand, this time use wet and dry 1200, just enough to take the roughness of it, 4-5 coats of clear lacquer, once its dry give it a light sand with the same 1200, then get some cutting polish and buff it up.

If you want you can give it to me and ill paint it for you, the weathers not the best just now though, the cold will make it dry naff.

deal! sounds a lot of pissin about...your the patient one lol. great ptogress tho and I will catch you about this panel! 60 is a bit low to be honest. 45-50 id say is perfect on a v6.
