my winter car/project cheap cheap.
Just picked up this for £120, its got mot untill April. Needs a bonnet, bumper, gear linkage and wiper arms.
Its got my original cavalier c18nz engine fitted badly, (certainly not done by me!) , brand new coilovers and a sportex exhaust for a hatchback
So plans are to change engine mount, tap chassis leg in a touch for clearance, pinch bonnetand wiper arms from my mates scrap nova and find a bumper, then run it over winter whilst cav is off the road. Then put a proper engine in, and throw the shitty 1.8 away.
The front bumper is a standard gsi one just smoothed over and lower grill removed. Not sure if I like it at the minute. The bonnet has seen much better days but thinking about painting it and the bumper black for the time being, so it doesnt look like a scrapper!
What you guys think? Only had it a couple of days. Never thought id be back in a nova!

Love it!
Even the hatchback exhaust kind of works. Stealth like.

Nice, always wanted one of them for some reason!
Re: my winter car/project cheap cheap.
If the bumper was free and is all you have for it then yeah it will do. But if you are buying one then i would look for an unpainted gsi one to match the back bumper.

Was £25, cant find a standard one for less than £40 and a gsi one for less than £90!TurboDan wrote:If the bumper was free and is all you have for it then yeah it will do. But if you are buying one then i would look for an unpainted gsi one to match the back bumper.
So for now I guess it will have to do.

The 1.8 should be quick enough in a nova.

Id rather have a 1.4 or 1.6. Same power but less weight.iangsi wrote:The 1.8 should be quick enough in a nova.

Just a quick pic of it with bumper and grill attatched properly. Adjusted exhaust a little bit cos its been fit by a monkey
Alternator to sort, gear linkage to swap and ride height setting properly cos thats also been set by a monkey, no infact a monkey would do a better job!
Terkin - I did think about it but depends if I keep it. I love the v6's, done alot with them before these Saab engines. I got 215hp from a c25xe with minimal work. That in my nova would be awesome especially the sound!

Re: my winter car/project cheap cheap.
Ok so after plenty of abuse its time to remove the engine for a more reliable one.
Iv picked up a 1.8 8v from mk2 Astra. Nothing fancy, but its 25hp more than the peice of crap in there at the minute.
Only managed an hour on it tonight but have stripped all the wiring back, taken all waterpipes off and well everything barring exhaust so its ready to drop down pretty much.
Iv only got the one pic at the minute but you can see the difference in wiring!

Re: my winter car/project cheap cheap.
Ha im saving that for my brothers, since it now needs taking apart as it was stolen and crashed. Scumbags! Id only just finished it aswell!!
Anyway had day off today so made some progress with mine.
Had chance to give it a quick drive up the road and its spot on, just a slight problem with alternator which ill sort tomorrow but its just so much better.
25hp makes a massive difference in a nova!

Oi! Its a special one as its square to match the airflow meter. The standard airbox doesnt fit so iv had to resort to that.terkin wrote:cool! where did you find that aifilter? bottom of a river

Re: my winter car/project cheap cheap.
Iv always said that! Had one in my belmont and it would average 40mpg more on a run and it wasnt exactly slow. So it cant be any worse in a nova!iangsi wrote:Those 1.8 SE engines don' get enough credit, bullet proof & pull well through all the gears
