Project Camper!

After the audi sold i searched around for weeks for something interesting to buy but there was nothing out there. So after wondering if a vw van would fit down the side of my house i decided to buy one and find out. Through working in the bodyshop all my mates there had camper vans and everyone knew someone that had one etc.. so i have been around them allot and often thought i should buy my own, and well here it is... lol.
Its a 2000 VW Transporter Caravelle 2.5tdi
Yes its not quite a camper van at the moment but it has great potential to be one. Being a caravelle rather than a normal work van means it has a few extra bits like factory fit windows, electric mirrors and windows, aircon, rear heaters, cruise control.
Its been remapped, spoiler fitted at the back, 4x brand new tyres, detachable towbar, new exhaust, recon gearbox and tourque converter. Which brings me to the fact that its also an automatic which isnt great but also isnt a massive issue for me as i will happily change the gearbox over and so will keep a look out for one at a good price but for now it will do the job. Oh and it came with 12 months tax and a FULL tank of fuel, bonus!
So i will be making this into a camper, a nice looking one so watch this space

Must admit I have a soft spot for the T4 Van, theres about 3 at my work everyday and all modded in some way....
Question is how long until Dan gets bored though and fits a porsche engine or something....Lol

Lol not sure i'll be fitting a porsche engine but when the time comes to do the gearbox i will see what other engines will go, but to be fair the 2.5 thats in it seems more than powerful enough for it so maybe not.
Will be making an exhaust for it at some point, maybe straight through not sure yet.
I will be doing allot of updates

There's a lot you can do with them, so it might be a while before boredom gets ahead of you. I love driving mine, although it is a bit of a slug with the normally aspirated 2.4 in it.

There are plenty of T4 / T5 magazines out there too for inspiration.
Thankfully, when the T4 hit the roads in about 1993, VW started to make decent engines. And they put them in the correct place ' at the front - lol
A lovely workhorse and a good base for a project.
If we had a Transporter Owners Club, then I could be included with my 1983 Type 2 T25 / T3 wedge.

Yeah it has a heater on the floor just at the back of the drivers seat. This is staying but i might move it over the the passenger side as where it is now it will be blowing heat at the units when i fit them.
Dont worry the cavs still here.

Wondered because the fan is seized on mine, although the main heater copes quite well anyway.

Ive been buying a few bits for the van. Got this lot which is 10 meters of stretchy dark grey van carpet, 15 metres of insulation and 10 big tins of high temp spray glue, all for £130 which is a great price.
Also bought some of this thinner insulation to put down first:
And i have just won a Genuine VW T5 Camper Sink and twin stove setup off ebay, with mixer tap, water pump etc... Getting that delivered.
Also picking up a set of units on saturday, kind of universal ones in a kit form that you build up yourself but they are very cheap at £130 and so can't go wrong. So thats me spent up for this month
But i have allot to keep me busy along with the cav project too.

Do you need a toilet Dan? I have a porta potti in the garage, as new. Bought it when my mother in law fell ill and it only had one wee in it, lol

Lol, i hadnt decided if we needed a toilet or not yet. What sort of money are you after for it? Also what type is it?

Er, a toilet type. Tbh it'll probably cost more to post it than it's worth, it was about £50 new I think. Porta potti, might have been a 45 but I would have to check the box. It's probably worth between £20 and £30, but it's bulky so post will kill it

Yeah true its not really worth buying a second hand one then and as you say the postage will be high for you where as a big company can send a brand new one out for free. Thanks anyway.
Have you got any pics of your camper?

Mine isn't a camper, it's a Caravelle, but I took the rear row of seats out and filled it with dog cages. Photos here somewhere.
