As the Cav decided to give up :'(
I had to get another car and decided to go for a cheap runner.
So i got one of these:

It cost me £200
No tax or MOT,
So got an 'MOT' done which cost £30
6 Month Tax cost £71

So about £300 in total...
Good points:
It cost £40 to fill it up and i get about 80 miles to a quater of tank...
Tax is cheap
Parts are cheap
insurance is cheaper...

Bad Points:
Had to get a new backbox as the one on there was in 2 halfs
Rear breaks are a b***ch to adjust to a nice level
Its a 1.1....

Mainly... Its not a Cavalier :(

But while im running it... i am saving money to get my next Cav (hopefully a Tubby :D)

You'll miss the comfort of the GLS but if it's a cheap run around and costs peanuts to run then no biggie!

Learn to drive it economically, you'll save even more quickly!
When I was about 19/20 I had a kadett d, I put a rebuilt engine in and drove it for 3000 miles keeping it below 2500rpm. My fuel consumption halved, and I learnt that full throttle isn't the only way to drive.
It's actually a challenge to get the best mpg you can and to try to beat your personal best, more interesting than it first seems.

Tip.... Carry a clutch cable and the white plastic connector that it attaches to in the passenger footwell, they have a habit of breaking. They are relatively easy to change, if a little awkward, but a pig to temporary repair. If you have the bits in the boot you are less likely to wind up getting towed to the garage.

With another 3p to be added to the price of petrol in the new year, you may well be onto something! :thumb

Ouch, bit of bad luck there. On the bright side, they may not implement the 3p rise, it's not confirmed.

Not much of a money saver atm... It has a tappy engine, so I got the lid off to sort it out...
Uses a shim system on an OHC... Turns out the cam shaft has mammoth play in it :(
And because its Italian... The cam sits directly on the cylinder head!!!
Got to get a replacement head for it before it knackers the whole block!!!
All fun fun fun!!!

Mmm, not sure much has been saved yet. The moral of the story? If you can resist the temptation to modify too much then there aren't many cars that work out cheaper overall to run than a Cavalier!

My Cav cost £155 8 years ago and apart from normal running expenses, tyres, servicing, a timing belt, it has cost me £9 for an antiroll bar link and a chunk of fuel hose and thats it! Regardless of fuel economy I think thats pretty respectable! But you do seem to be having more than usual amounts of ill fortune with your Fiat, normally the little "fire" engine is quite reliable! I can't drive small cars - anything under a 2.0 and I drive like I have something to prove... plus when I'm in a short car I park like a woman. Give me something the length of a Volvo Estate, however, and I can park in the tiniest of spaces, with only cm to spare - can't work out why.

I like my cars like I like my men - big and old.

nice car but if you plan on keeping it longer then 12 months make sure you get some new handbrake cables as this is a fault with this car
