Spare steel wheel/tyre size with 17" alloys

Post by Metallicav »

I was wondering what size wheel and tyre I would need to have with my set of four 215/40/17 alloys, I have two spare wheels the original 14" steel and also a steel on a 185/55/15 tyre, the 15" seems like it would be a similar size to the 215/40's. When I compare it the 225/45 tyres on the back 17" currently (wrong size I know but they can on them), surely the hight is the main factor with the spare? :scratch . But I'm wondering what others think or have done.

I probably would but I can't find one, I know the make but not the model just that they're Kahn Rsr reps by MiM, I started a thread with 'what are these alloys' or a similar title a couple of threads below this one.

Thinking about it will a 215/40/17 wheel fit properly in the full size spare wheel well?

For a spare, anything will do that is designed for the car. Original steelies with standard tyres are your easiest solution. Obvious thing, but with higher rim diameter come smaller side profile tyres, so the overall diameter isn't much different.

I have just bought an Astra mk4 Convertible Turbo
These have 215/40/17s
In the boot is a steel spare that fits perfectly over 308s like the mk4 has or my Cavalier, wheel is 16" and 205/50/16, like a std cav turbo and 49mm offset.
perfect for your needs and on ebay frequently. I'm probably going to start collecting them for mine.

If you are 5 stud that is.
If not convert it!

So the spare is a 205/50/16? If that's right surely a spare out of a four stud mk4 astra sxi would be perfect as they have 16" alloys on 205/50/16 does anyone know if the spare is the same? Cheers for the help :thumb
As for the 15 I think I'll get some more and use them for winter when the car goes on the road or as a spare for 15" winter alloys if that's the case.

Fit a 185/60/15 tyre and you have same rolling radius as your 215/40/17

But depends on how long you want to drive on the spare for? if its just to get you home, then any wheel will do, (Think modern space saver wheels) they are ment for just getting you home, not to be driven on.

If you want to be able to drive about for a while, the best det to get the tyre I told you, or even better a part worn 215/40/17 tyre and cheap alloy from some where.

My 3 cavs are as follows

my TD has 5 diplomat/expression alloys , My Cesaro full st of five astra bbs 17" alloys, and my v6 has a set of 17 alloys, with a random 17 spare. I painted satin black.

Alright cheers, for the price of tyre I may aswell get a 17" spare now I know it'll fit in the wheel well, as for the spare I'd want to use it for a couple of days until I'd be able to source a new tyre :thumb I'll find another use for the 15"

No point worrying about being absolutely precise if its only a spare. There shudnt be that much difference in overall height and size with a smaller rim and chunkier tyre, itll still do the same job as any other spare wheel

The over all diameter of cavalier factory 15's (195/60), is wider than your 17's with 215/40.

The only problem you'll have is the the 17 will stick up higher as it will be wider compared to a 15. So you'll get a slight hump in your carpet.
