Cav Slabs - Tyre size Choices ?

Post by Sean986 »

So I picked up my new cavalier project at the weekend and part of the deal was he left the cav slabs on the car as he did plan to take them off.

Upon inspection the tyres are from 2003 and I plan to replace them.

What size tyres should I be buying ?

I remember my 2nd cavalier had 17s with 205 40 17s and they run fine so was using tyre comparison and 195 50 15 looks to be a very similar rolling radius.

Would these be OK?

I can get toyo proxes tr1s really cheap in this size at trade from our tyre supplier.

What size is everyone else running on 15s? The wheels currently have 205 55 15s

Your slabs look to be in really good condition, that's a pleasant surprise :)

To save a bit of money I'd stick with the recommended size for your gls for now, 195x60x15, same as my cdx.
- It's on pi -35mm front springs and bilstein b4 shocks, front only. As standard the cdx was vague and bouncy at the front, this is much better now :D

I see little point in spending on wider tyres until they're needed with the turbo conversion and upgraded parts, bearing in mind the extra weight/loads.

-I fitted 205's on 13" rims to my manta's (pre power steering) on both cars. Looked fantastic, good grip but....
... both cars needed the manual steering racks replaced within 3 years due to the extra weight and strain the were designed for.

Due to age any cavalier on the road is is a head-turner now, It doesn't have to be high spec anymore.
There's always an admirer (or nutter!) wanting to talk about it
" It's not rust. It's age-related patina " ;)
