Cold air and temperature gauge

Post by Dilinja »

Was driving in to work this morning when quite suddenly the hot air from the blowers became icy cold and the temperature gauge on the dash started to slowly go up.

Everytime I was stopped in traffic I had smoke/steam coming out from under the bonnet so ended up pulled over in a layby waiting for the engine to cool. By this point the temp gauge was almost in the red

Is this going to be something as simple as water/oil (which I will be doing in a minute anyway) or could it be something else?

Many thanks

Sounds like the coolant has drained out... Check for split hoses and the rad itself. Likely hood is a split hose... Wouldn't drive it any further or you'll cook the head gasket.

What's your engine mate? :)

Not good... If you can find a local garage or autofactors, you may have to check which hose you need to replace. Have a look around the engine bay first to make sure where the problem part is.

Do you have breakdown cover or anything?

Ill check my insurance policy (I really ought to know that already, but I only had the car for a couple of months and am selling it on in two weeks anyway!).

I'm really not too savvy when it comes to finding stuff in the engine bay and I've got meetings this afternoon I cant get out of.

Bugger bugger bugger bugger!!! :cry

Finding a blown hose isn't difficult, pop your head underneath, see where water is dripping down, then look to see what's wet in the engine bay. You should get a strong smell of hot coolant, a musty sort of smell....

The garage have found a split pipe and are in the process of replacing it at the moment.

Pending the pressure test I should be able to go home tonight, woot!

Thanks for all the help.
