Tensioner won't tension?
Anyone ever had this? Is it something i'm doing wrong? Done plenty of cambelts in the past and never had a problem. This is the 3rd tensioner i've used now. Basically it does tension, but the needle doesn't come up to indicate a new or old belt. Suspect this is causing my rev counter to show 400rpm when you turn the ignition lights on too.
Engines an ecotec x20xev but i suspect this could happen on almost any engine. Thanks in advance and all that!

Don't think so as it's only been on the car about 14 months. Haven't got another one to measure it against, but i suppose the price of a new belt is bugger all to find out! Are those gates ones any good?

Re: Tensioner won't tension?
If it's like it with a new tensioner then as Dan suggested check the belt isn't too long, although I suspect this is unlikely, if it was that knackered it would be ready to break. More likely, has the water pump been replaced with the wrong one, or top of the list, has it possibly been put in rotated incorrectly. The pumps are still the same design as the pre tensioner ones, and hence the orientation of the pump will affect the ability of the belt tensioner to tension enough to move the pointer.

they check the level when it's serviced don't they?"

Re: Tensioner won't tension?
Steve as planetc says check water pump is correct and id put in correctly. Also check the tensioner lug fits in between the groves on the block, if you haven't done this there will be no tension

Me get rid? NEVER lol Did think about it but too attached to it now. It's gonna need some welding soon but going to the doctors tomorrow to get those tablets to stop smoking so I can spend all my money on the car instead!
