Which engine oil to use

Post by badwez »

Which grade of engine oil should I use in my 1995 1.8i automatic? I'ts done 75k miles, and I mainly do short trips. The manual say's to use 10w/40, but it's been recommended that I use 10w/50! I'm not very mechanically minded, but was going to give the car a good 'home' service.

Thank you. A mate of mine said about using 10w/50 oil; I'm not thick, but still learning about mechanics and cars

Sod that! I don't believe in wasting money, no matter how much I love my Cav! It's only a 1800cc 8v (one of the most reliable engines ever made in my humble opinion)........hardly in the same league as the 2.0 dohc or V6

Sometimes you can get a £13 deal from Vauxhall, 5litres of oil and a filter ;)

Also note: You only need 4 litres for the 1.8 engine.

£13 is a good price! Sadly the Vauxhall dealer in Salisbury went bust, and I'm not sure where the next nearest dealer is; will do a google search!

Most big Tesco stores sell Magnatec 10w/40, I use that.

I also use Magnatec 10W/40 in mine, protects the engine well and doesnt burn off like the cheap stuff does..

Learnt my lesson for using cheap oil when my Astra died due to the engine not being protected properly!
Free Parking is a bonus, leaving my Cav in a carbon dust filled carpark is not.....
